I bought a used warn M8000 winch and never had to "use" it for intended purposes for several months however when I blew out two tires a few months ago while working on a ditch in Bridgeport I was in need of winching to get out without causing further damage to my jeep, well upon hooking up to my buddies bumper and started to engage the winch it pretty much said " no " what it did was pull me until the weight of the jeep was starting to incline up the ditch and basically it just stopped however id DIDNT let go. I ended up just powering out and moving on.
recently I tore it apart and cleaned it up REALLY good and re-assembled it with the recomended lubricant... I gave it another try and STILL same thing no power once the full weight is on this time I was trying to winch straight up on a tree to pull the front wheels off... Ive tried this hundreds of times before with my old winch with no problems...
here is my setup
warn M8000 with the solenoid box relocated to the engine compartment for aesthetics The wiring I used to go from the solenoid box to the winch motor is some 220v wire from a extension cord... the thickness of the wire itself not including the shield is a little thicker than a pencil.
so my dilemma is what is wrong the motor or the wiring? orrrr something TOTALLY different?
Thanks for all your help in advance!

Scott, sounds like your wiring is too light. Those winches pull up to 400 amps. I use at least 0 gauge wire and preferably 00

Wellllll I guess tomorrow Ill up the ante on those three! I REALLY hope its those cause the cheapest motor I found was `100 bucks although that much copper in the cable is pretty expensive as well LOL

The best place to get the power cables would be a welding supply shop. Just get 0 or 00 welding lead, it is nice and flexable.

Like the wiring for ground clamps?

the wire needs to be bigger than any other wire in your jeep 0gauge will be the size of your finger. Your lucky this didn't happen

That is amazing... I think I would be just sitting there watching it too.. then again, I guess if you have no power.. what better do you have to do?? LOL...

I am honestly thinking that I would recommend the upgrade of wiring... not for sure that will actually fix the issue at hand... but I think it will help stop any more severe issues you might possibly have due to "weak" wiring once you do get the winch working correctly..

I would definately go with 0 gauge wire and solder on lugs. Anything less will put your xj at risk and could also fry the warn's motor.

Why don't you guys go in halves, but a good winch and keep it on your Jeep? :D

I HAD one but sold in in an attempt to creat better air flow with the m8000 design, my first warn I was able to hang my XJ in a tree... did it a few times!
