Hello all, Need help agian. I did an axle swap out of a '92 4 banger got 4.10's now. I put a lock right in the rear D35. I bought it used but got new springs and the little dowls for it. So no instructions, I found them on line but the pictures were not so good. I pulled the carrier out then put it back in and tightened it back to spec. But here is the trouble that I am having it his humming under power. When I brought the '92 home it did not make any noise. So now I need to figure out if its because of the locker or if I should have done something when I put it back in.(like not pull it out, live and learn) So any ideas?

do you know how to set up a carrier once pulled? you have to set the backlash correctly. you usually can install the locker without pulling the carrier.

Does yours have the side shims in it? Did you by any chance get then reversed?

If you install the carrier the exact same way it came out, you dont have to set it up again. To the OP sounds like maybe you put a bearing cap on backwards or got em swapped side to side. Or what steve said.

It is very possible that I might have got them mixed up.So If I do process of elimination I can get it back to a non humming D35? I figured out that I did not need to pull it after it was to late. Was exited to get it in first one I have ever had. lol I need to slow down sometimes.

I would suggest you change those side shims around first. That will probably do it. When you remove a carrier to put in a locker, you have to lay stuff out so you can get in exactly the way it came out.

Are you talking about the ones that go between the axle and locker?

On my D 35 there were two shims that fit on the outside of the bearings and under the bearing caps. These are used by the factory to set the backlash on the gears. If you get them mixed up, the backlash will be wrong. I am thinking you got them swapped around.

How much play do the lock right lockers have? I think that I might have an excessive amount in mine. thanks

What do you mean by "play"?

When I turn the drive line by hand it turns about an 1/8" or more before it starts turning the tire's either way.

That is a sign of excessive backlash. They get that way anyway with high milage. That play is in the ring and pinion gears. As long as the locker pieces fit snugly together from the pressure of the springs, then that is OK

I have to agree with Steve on this issue , but I would add that if you are unsure of how to "set up" a rear end I would take it in and have a pattern run on it before damage is done and you lose it.

When I had my rear end open and was turning the drive line back and forth. It looked like the metal pins are where the play is coming from, like the holes they are in are to big for them.

You'd have a slight clunk in it as you let up on the gas if it were those pins. Have to go with the reversed/mixed up shims as being your noisemaker.

Ok so I pulled the locker out I was getting a clunk when I let up on the throttle. After looking at it the holes that the pins are in were egg shaped. Wondering if they maybe make a sleeve kit for it. But I still have a little hmmm. Thinking it might be because I had to keep driving it back and forth to work and dropping the kids off at school. What do you guys think?

Did you by any chance grind down the cross pin when installing it?

I don't think so was I suppose to? Everthing looked ok when I inspected it.

I think some pics might be in order here. The holes shouldn't be egg shaped. And no, you weren't supposed to grind the pin. However that is a common cause of what you are describing with the clunking.

Well I figured out how to get rid of my humming Dana 35!! Buy another jeep with the same ratio and do the swap again. Ha Ha and this time don't pull the third member.

You can pull it again, I pulled mine. You just have to be careful to put it back exactly the same,
