Im about to start my own business piloting oversized loads and Ive been reviewing cars that Id trust to put on the highway for about 4-500 miles a week. Given that I know so much about XJ's I really am considering moving into this position using a late model XJ with really no mods as far as suspension and probably not even a 4wd.
what I really need to know is what kind of MPG are you non lifted late model XJ guys getting?
just a simple...http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQO0e2eF0i76alV-JNTFb7SKuAwV8fBmbvVQnxy0IHWdoLx8X0hkw

Was driving my wifes stock 01 back and forth to work for a while. Its is 95 miles round trip, mostly highway. Cost around $15-$20 a day in gas.

I'm not sure I would use an Xj for that. Not that they aren't dependable or anything, I just think that wouldn't be a good choice for escorting. I have seen every kind of vehical doing that up and down the highway so I don't know what would be best.

I hear Xj owners saying 20+ mpg and I would believe it but to be realistic I wouldn't count on over 20 mpg in one. I would go for comfort, and economy for that type work.

I probably didn't address your question as you would like but opinions are free and like other things, everybody's got one.

well I used to do this with a ranger and those damn things kinda hold some good value anyhow I really like the later model seats and since I wont really be exceeding 65 very often while working then I feel the XJ is a good candidate.. POSSIBLY even a 4 banger I could even swap 3.55 gears into it to kinda assist in better MPG. the guys that Im kinda joining are running whatever they have... which for a few guys is a f250 lol I REALLY wanna make some cash on this !
given my background in being able to repair on the fly I feel I can survive for a year or two using the jeep im trying to locate a cheap one with low miles then I could rack into the 300k area and then buggy it out lol

I can get 20-23 mpg out of my 6 cylinder 5 speed 4x4, but that is keeping the RPMs low and the speed at 45 mph or below. I don't know what my highway mpg is, but I do not think it would be any better than I am already getting and most likely only about 20 or so. The wind resistance is the main issue especially as low as I keep the RPMs. If I have a head wind I usually don't even get into 5th gear because I have to keep the torque up a bit just to over come the winds, which here in Oklahoma can be 35mph consistent and gusting into the 40-50mph range.

Now I would like to find a 2wd with same engine/trans and with a few mods I would like to see how much mpg I could get out of it.

Good luck with your escort service... :D

Hi,

Before I lifted mine (2001, 4.0, Auto) it was ~5.5-6 km for 1L.
which is ~14 miles per 1 gallon.

I average 18 mpg on the freeway at 65 mph. I have the aw15 in 5th to get that. I only have 1.5" lift

If you are looking for milage, stock motor, no lift and make an air dam for the front, stock street tires and fuel injected 4 cyl. I had a friend that got 25 mpg. And stay away from any gas with ethanol in it.

yeah I have a arsenal for great fuel economy that I keep up my sleeve. I used to have a 2002 mazda protege that I got up to 38 MPG and when I wanted the torque I was still able to pull away from a mazda speed turbo... same car only turbo charged.
all I did was a custom intake and certain spark plugs and a little fine tuning here and there and I still got to run 87 octane.

My main issue is I HAVE to use a truck or SUV for the job as I have to obtain a certain visibility I used to use a 1998 ford ranger which did good but I don't know much about rangers under the hood and they are actually MORE money than an XJ is, yes it would be nice to have a little pickup to throw spare tires and wheels for the oversized guys and to have emergency equipment available so Im still at a loss for what kind of vehicle to start off with...

As un-american as it is to say, but stay away from domestic small trucks. Nissan and Toyota will give you much better MPG and dependabilty. If ya can, go with a Nissan. Much cheaper than a yota and just as dependable. Have had tons of em, and know em top to bottom.

An xj sounds great, but i would probably go with a chevy half ton. Their readily available, easy to work on, parts are cheap and easy to come by, the later ones are getting 20 mpg, and you can move other cars (not literally) to clear a lane for your oversize better since its bigger. To find a good one might be a little pricey. We run hotshot and have used chevy trucks for a few years. Our '94 half ton has 286k on it, our ex '07 one ton gas had 316k when we traded it in, and we've put 160k in 15 months on our current '10 one ton gas. Just my .02.

Bewdy ... another opportunity to sell my little, beat up, petrol/lpg dual fuel, asian "pickup" .... with a ford badge on it ....

.... Comes with complimentary haybale twine and fence wire cuttings ... and sheep shyte stuck in unwashable spots .... :D

Escort vehicles down here are primarily a "pickup" ... handy to carry stuff on. Lots of smaller operators just use whatever they have tho.

I normally get at least 330 highway miles to a tank, out of my stocko, 4.0l, AW4 XJ ... can stretch it to 350 if Im careful ...

Dont forget you're going to blow your fuel consumption out the window if you have to mount a 5' x 2' Wide Load sign on the roofracks ... ;)

What do you guys think about a propane conversion to decrease the $$$ per mile?

bigjim350

I'm not sure propane is less $$$ per mile. My understanding is that you get less miles per gallon. So would probably cost about the same. And be more of a pain to find

What happened to the jeep shop job?

jeep shop not doing so well... I kinda found out why when I decided to call and get a prce on shocks... $16 more a piece ... SOME folks will pay that cause they arent near a Bunch of shops but I decided to buy mine from 4wp for 39 each.
They are also going downhill financially so they had to let all techs go.
as for the foreign trucks yeah I wouldnt mind getting a tacoma or a frontier ... more likely a tacoma but I cant find a decent deal on one AND I wont settle for a IFS setup.

On MPG for a XJ: I had a 91 5spd 4.0. I got 20/21mpg with that. It is also a really fun vehicle to drive as the torque is pretty nice with the 5spd.

With my 97, 4.0, aw4 i was getting 18/19mpg. I just filled up yesterday, and I'm getting ~15mpg in the heep with the new gears!

Ok, so you want a small truck for traveling...who cares if it has an IFS, it will ride better and more than likely be 2wd anyways....i.e. cheaper. I've had all sorts of small trucks. I can tell you that the nissan/toyotas of say late 90's early 2000's are really good trucks. I had a little tacoma 4cyl long bed. That thing was spartan on the inside but would run for days.

not too bad, I suppose I could opt for a late model coupe with a stick and 4.0

01 auto: 21-23 on highway. cone filter on intake,235/75R15 tires.other than changing the plugs with copper champions,I do NOT touch things. it runs well and I leave it alone.

Generally Im getting 17mpg but with some basic hypermiling I have got to 22mpg

From my understanding about propane is that its a less energy dense fuel than gasoline so Im not sure it would decrease the $pg. Me and a friend have played with the idea of building an ecomodded MJ with the goal of 35mpg
