Hi all, :D

I have a '94 Cherokee here in New Zealand to go with my '02 KJ. It is not a bad old girl and I am quietly getting it back into shape. It has 147000km (91000 miles) on it. I have had the dealers (yes I know :mock: ) do the trans fluid and transfer case with ATF+4.

When I put it into 4x4 Full Time and give it a little gas it seems to be a bit noisy from the transfer case area. It is as quiet as a mouse in 2WD. I do know they can be a little noisy as my last 2 have made a little extra noise in 4WD. But this one seems much noisier under load at about 25-35mph. :hmmmm2:

Have any of you had a similar event or are there any obvious suggestions:?: I have a feeling my trans mount might be gone too as it bangs and carries on in reverse.

Thanks

Oliver :comfort:

Sounds like it could be a loose chain in the t-case. Pretty common on the np242

Hey Mate, you listed your transfer case as an NP231. That case is not a full time tcase. Might be a case of terminology here. But these cases are only designed to be used in slippery conditions. What kind of terrain did you engage it on?

Howdy,
You are correct! Terminology issue! :rolleye0012: It is a 242 as are pretty much all Cherokees in our neck of the world. I think it was only TJs that got the 231.

Over in this part of the world, the 231 is most common. But if you are getting noise you could have a mismatched tire issue causing your fluid coupling issues. Might be u joints too. Can you describe the noise? could also be a stretched chain since it has to work extra being full time.

242's with a stretched chain will ONLY make a noise while engaged in 4wd and AWD
the noise sounds like an AWFUL grinding noise, try this while its in all wheel drive and jeep stopped just let the idle take it up to speed and give a LITTLE on the gas, if it doesnt make the noise until you give it a bit more gas then yeah its a strettched chain and those dang things are $$$ and even MORE out in your neck of the woods I bet

Howdy,

Hmmm, sounds like it. A bit of backlash in it too so looks like a chain.

Thanks

If you replace the chain, be sure to replace the sprockets too. Otherwise the chain will stretch prematurely and you will just have to do it again soon.
