Hey guys, new to this forum, been a Jeeper forever now :) Got a question about retrofitting a transmission. I have a 98 XJ, with a smoked transmission, my buddy has a good AW4 out of a 95, would I be able to make it work in the 98? Thanks in advance :)

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.. but I think the only possible difference would be connectors on the tranny.. and possibly either the input or the output spline count.. I just can't remember which one I read changed.. I want to say it was the output shaft.. But I know someone else will chime in here shortly with an answer for sure..

87 to 91 or 93, can't remember which has a 21 spline output. After that, 23 spline

Yes.. I was right.. I thought it was the output spline count that changed.. just couldn't remember the exact years that had what spline count.. I knew the 96+ at least had the 23, but couldn't remember what years prior to that had the 23 spline only, and which ones were kind of a toss up as to which you got..

Don't the plugs change as well?

96+ is OBD2 correct?

It will work but not in 4 wheel low(will stay in 1st). 96+ has a rpm sensor (drivers side 1/2 up the case) that the 95 and older don't. but the good news is the 96 to 01 will work in any year with a harness swap. I've only seen the 21 spline case issue in my 87 jeep

Yes it will retrofit but you will need to also install the harness. I think I have a how-to in my files, will check and post it if I find it.
