HANG UP AND DRIVE!

I saw the above words on the windshield of a SUV traveling the opposite way that I was. The letters were about 6" tall and spanned the entire windshield.

On, and they were a MIRROR image making it easily readable in the rear view mirrors!

I wanted to stop the person driving the SUV and shake their hand.

Hey there isn't ANYTHING wrong with people driving and talking on the cell phone. I don't want to come across that I think it shouldn't be done. We all should have the freedom to do what we want to do, until it hurts, or impairs others right to do the same thing.

As you mentioned, if you're unable to focus on driving and talking, just get out of the freaking way! We've become a society of ME and screw the rest of you. You see this same attitude from people driving the speed limit in the fast lane, being self appointed police and stopping others from breaking the law.

Don't imped traffic. If you are unable to multi task, then get off the phone! Driving and talking is just a personal limitation for you, so don't do it!

I agree with Wayne. I had a guy talking on a cell phone cut me off to the point he almost ran over my front end with his trailer. Then almost talked through the traffic light. Dumb ass

I totally agree with all of you, however, I'm guilty. I conduct a large part of my business on the phone while driving. I don't claim to be "different" than anyone else, but driving always comes first. If I feel I'm distracted I get off the road or hang up. Makes me wonder how we did it before cell phones.

The way we got along before cell phones was simple, you didn't talk on the phone unless you pulled over at a pay phone booth and used it while stopped. It did not seem it was something one could not live with out, if it was, they had a very expensive "car phone" installed. Studies have shown that accidents that involve cell phone use tend to be worse accidents and usually involve a death or serious injurys. I believe no one really must talk on the phone while driving.

I've even seen cops that are incapable of driving and talking on the phone. We have available hands free attachments, and those at least allow you to keep both hands on the wheel. I've seen people talking on the phone and get so aggitated they ended up rear ending another person because they were in an argument on the phone. I want a law to stop the stupidity. Some people are capable of talking on the phone and driving safely but they seem to be the extreme minority in the USA.

Just this moring I was almost pulled into three times on my way to work by drivers not paying attention. All three were on the freaking phone!! When I'm driving or riding the bike, if some one calls, they have to leave a voice mail, the only time that doesn't happen is when wolf is with me and she answers the phone from the passenger seat.

We have to be careful about legislating personal responsibility. People should know whether or not it is safe for them to drive and talk on the phone. The other drivers around them need to be aware and drive defensibly, just like you would with any threat on the road.

The reason I say we need to be careful, is what's next? No eating while driving? No talking on the CB radio? How about talking on the HAM radio? Then a GPS, audio system, and those damn baggy pants kids wear around their knees.

None of us like people not paying attention to their driving, nor do we care for people endangering us or our loved ones, friends, or co-workers. There has to be a balance.

Perhaps the better way to handle this is make it illegal to talk on the cell phone unless you've been through a state approved course. Maybe tested in a simulator. Personally I like the air horn idea.

Many years ago a comic suggested shooting suction cup darts, really big ones, at the vehicles of bad drivers. If you saw a car with a lot of darts you knew to steer clear of them. :smiley-laughing021:

Awesome banner.

I try to avoid talking on the phone, but it's insane in Columbus. Atleast once a week I almost get taken out by some dummy on a cellphone. The other day it was a brand new Infinity.

This is getting out of hand, and its even worse with texting. I see it all the time and its so irritating. I mean, these people are choosing to be less aware. Maybe we should start taping everyone's hands to the wheel, but even those hands free headsets don't help because its the conversation that distracts you. And now the automakers are supporting it by installing them into cars from the factory.

By the way, as i'm writing this an H2 is crossing into the shoulder in front of me. Haha:bang:

Normally my phone is in the cup holder or on the passenger seat. I don't understand how people can feel that important or the need to feel that connected. I personally like to have some time that I'm disconnected and can be left alone.

On the subject of personal liberties, liberty stops where it infringes on another's rights. I have the right to be safe as reasonably possible on the road. That means, my right to safety supersedes someone else's right to free speech on a phone, especially texting. As far as eating while driving, that was illegal in WA state years ago, it still may be. It was for the same reasons as stated above. Too much distraction. By the way, I was cut off by a woman talking on a cell phone. She failed to yield the right of way. Big startles expression when she became aware.

If you try to outlaw talking or texting while driving because SOME people can't multi task, that would give grounds to outlaw all lifted vehicles cause SOME people were too dumb to build a safe vehicle. We have enough laws as far as im concerned.

If the laws worked I might be for it but here in Washington state the law was passed no talking without a hands free device and NOTHING changed.
Just another law that costs the tax payer and does nothing to improve safety because no one is obeying the law. :sad0147:

Here it is against the law to hold the phone while driving, you are allowed to spear on a car speaker phone.
2 days ago, a car hit my wife's car while she was waiting for few kids to cross the road.
The driver who hit her was looking for her phone since it rang....
so she didn't see that my wife stopped.
She was so thankful to my wife who got the hit, since if she wasn't there, she would run over the kids!
Bottom line, keep your eyes on the road. the phone can probably wait...

I think this is the hole problem. We are taught to pay attention to the person on the phone. My wife has learned years ago that I may stop talking at any given moment while driving and talking on the cell, as driving conditions demand! My driving comes first, not some secondary conversation I'm having on the phone. Hell I've dropped the phone before when necessary.

She's an adult and like me she understands that she wants my safety first.

There's a texting ban, and it does nothing. We just need to enforce the laws we have for things like reckless driving.

When it comes to laws not being enforced we can look to the cops and the courts for those at blame. cops don't enforce laws that judges continually deny to enforce through heavy fines, removal of driver's licenses and impoundment of the vehicle of said drivers. The cop sees it as a waste of their time since the judge is just going to let the perpetrator go back on the streets. It also doesn't help when the state reps don't follow the laws they make by making themselves exempt.

As far as freedom to be an inatentive driver, Jimbo. I want the freedom to end the life of someone who endangers my life, in any way, shape or form. That's called self defense. Will I get that freedom? doubtful cause some hoser elected official will find a way to make it my fault the Idiot tried to hit me while talking on the phone during driving. I also want the freedom to go 100+ miles per hour on the freeway, can't get that freedom either cause the hoser elected officials think going fast automaticaly makes you unsafe. But in Germany, I can go as fast as I want on the Autobaun as long as I have the license to prove I can safely guide a vehicle at those speeds.

The fine here is $482 for talking on a cell phone. It is not the judicial system, it is that the cops don't write enough tickets for it.

I'm lucky I drive mostly on back roads without much traffic. As I stated earlier I conduct all my business on cell phone, even my office phone is forwarded to my cell. I would be in a world of hurt if it became against the law to talk and drive. I have personel rules about what I will and won't do on the phone while driving.
I can't point the finger at anyone else when I'm doing the same as them, HOWEVER, there are some real distracted idiots out there. I'm on the fence about legislating common sense. My pet peave is the inability to stop the drunk drivers in our area, it is absurd the amount of DWI accidents we have. If the current laws don't stop DWI how can new laws stop cell phone use?

In arkansas you seem to be able to get five DWI's before anything happens. All the cops I know stopped writing courtesy law violations because the IDIOT JUDGES don't hand out the fines. I did a one month study and the cities are missing out on aprox. 350k per month just for courtesy law and red light running violations. I don't mind folks that can pay attention to the road and use their cell phone, however since at least 90% of the people driving on our roads here don't have the ability to walk and chew gum at the same time with out running into something, I really have a problem with those imbiciles being allowed to use a cell phone while behind the wheel. Just last week I was nearly hit three times each day from some idiot with a cell phone stuck to their ear. I know many that can pay attention to the road and talk at the same time but lets make it real. Before 1980 almost no one had a cell and if they did, they had spent big bucks on it, had little coverage out side the bigger cities so it was mostly for show by the wealthy or the wanna be wealthy. Now nearly everyone breathing (I've even seen six year olds with their own) has a cell and they seem to think it is their right to use it as much as possible, reguardless of if they are infringing on others rights or not. There is something wrong with this picture. Just my opinion and I don't really count since I am technically dead but it still makes me shake my head in disbelief.

My personal view is: If you get caught in a DWI, lets crush your vehicle and make you finish out the payments. If you're in an accident because you were on the phone, you loose your phone and can't get another one for five years. Just Saying.

I've noticed an interesting phenomenon caused by mobile phones over the years ....

A lack of socialising skills ....

The most recent example was the other weekend during a family get together.

All the younguns sat around texting their thumbs off - telling other people they were at a BBQ ... or sending dumbarzz messages across the backyard to each other ....

They had nothing to actually, talk about, amongst themselves ... coz in the days leading up to the BBQ ... they had already, instantly .... texted every little mundane occurrence that had happened in their lives.

As for driving ... wellll, its a skill which has enough distractions, without adding phones and other junk to the mix ....

I've been mobile phone free for nearly 15yrs .... and have had a need for one .... probably 3 times in that 15yrs ??.

Handy things for some business operations ... which is why I had 'em in the first place ... but just a time & space waster otherwise, IMHO.

I'm with you on that one Carves. I have one because I don't have a land line and it is around mostly for breakdowns in or on the vehicles. Sucks to be on the bike, have something go bad and you're 50 miles from anywhere. That's when the cell phone is handy. We do use it to call the kids in Canada but mostly it sits silent because no one calls us unless there's an emergency or a club event coming up. Interestingly, it is our neighbor friends that call us the most, from their home which is about 20 steps from our front door.:smiley-laughing021::smiley-laughing021::smiley-laughing021:

My whole problem is that when it's motivated purely by profit. In Columbus, after the economy started to slide. Parking enforcement started writing more $50 illegal parking tickets than $20 parking tickets. Afew years back a portion of Columbus flooded under several hours of 1+ inch an hour rains. The next day (less than 12 hours later), the city came through and ticketed all the flooded and disabled cars that were parked on the streets in this area.

There's also the whole Red Light Camera rant (that I won't get into). I have no problems enforcing the laws that are on the books, but I do take exception when they are used to turn a profit.

This morning on the interstate I looked over to my left and
there was a WOMAN in a brand new Cadillac doing 65 mph
with her face up next to her rear view mirror putting on her
eyeliner.

I looked away for a couple seconds and when I
looked back she was halfway over in my lane, still working
on that makeup.

As a man, I don't scare easily, but she scared
me so much; I dropped my electric shaver, which knocked the
donut out of my other hand.

In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees against the steering wheel, it knocked my cell phone away from my ear which fell into the coffee between my legs, splashed, and burned Big Jim and the Twins, ruined the cell phone, soaked my pants, and disconnected an important call.

Women drivers!
