Ok, I know this is a random/basic question, but I'm sitting here @ my desk and can't for the life of me remember what group size our Cherokee's take (specifically a 2000). Mine is leaking and has spilled battery acid all over that corner and ate up the paint, so I need to replace it ASAP. Thanks in advance!

group size is 78 for the cherokee. here's a link to a page with a bunch that fit your cherokee. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PartSearchCmd?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&pageId=partTypeList&searchTerm=ewautomtvbttr&queryType=BBV&showTitle=no&sortBy=5&cm_sp=BBVS-_-Batteries,+Electrical+and+Wiring-_-Automotive+batteries

78? Ok, cool. Cuz everything I've been reading says 34...just figured I'd ask.

Only reason I'd disagree...is that the 78 is a side-post terminal battery...and the 34 is a top-post battery.....

Ok, I think it's a 34/78 battery size....cool, thanks! 34 for top post, 78 for side post (same dimensions).

Looking at that link Liz gave the top choice for mine is a 34/78 group, so I guess that's a battery with top and side posts.

that's correct. 78 is side, 34 is top, a 34/78 is both. Just sucks that after spending ~$400 for my lift, I now have to dump another ~$100 for a battery....yaaaay.....lol

Ok, now that we have the "size" determined, what're some suggestions for a sealed battery that won't break the bank? I'd love to get an Optima, but the ~$200 price tag is a bit daunting. I'd be ok with a normal, vented battery, but the reason mine is now leaking is due to some jostling around on the trails.

Check your local Sam's club for a Redtop. I think they are about $130. If I was going to spend $100 on a battery I'd add $30 to it...

Damn, totally forgot about Sam's club....just sucks I'm not a member. :-/ good call though, I'll have to try and see what they have and if it really is only $130, I'd be all over that like a fat kid on a Twinkie!

Well I tend to forget the 9, so it may be $139. I bet you can find a friend that has a card.

You can also check Pop Boys if you have one. They will beat any price. So will Summit Racing and 4 Wheel Parts.

I have a friend that has a Sam's Club card...may have to go with her and see if they have em. Their website doesn't list any automotive batteries.

Just got off the phone with them....Yellow Top: $180. They also have a Duracell that's maintenance-free and sealed (no caps on the top) for $75. Looks like I found what I need for now. $75 is the lease expensive I've found...

No red tops? I was thinking about going and getting a yellow top for my 98 and putting the red top in the TJ.

I asked and she said she didn't see any over there (maybe she just didn't look hard enough). But the Duracell is a sealed and maintenance free battery for $75. I'm going to check on it tonight or tomorrow and see what they got.

$75 is tempting, don't blame you there. ;)

The Duracell website says that one of the models is completely sealed and maintenance free....if so, that's what I'll be picking up. And at less than 1/2 the cost of an Optima...for my purpose, this may work out perfectly.

Oddly enough ... the FSM says its a group 58 ???

Dunno whether its useful or not ... but you can fit a 280 x 175 x 175 battery in there - with a bit of fiddling with the tray and clamps ... 11" x 6.75" x 6.75"

Now it days it don't leak and all but is it an actual gel cell like the Optima? One advantage of the optima is they will work at any angle , even upside down . Standard liq. filled wont.

NAPA has a gel battery that is cheaper than an Optima

I went to go by NAPA Saturday, but they were closed (stupid me for sleeping in). I checked out the "sealed" battery from Sam's Club and it is indeed a gel mat, sealed battery...for $99 (silly lady on the phone quoted me the $75 price for the "normal" maintenance-free battery, not the sealed one). Still haven't picked one up yet...waiting to see what NAPA's battery is and how much.
