The starter is going out on the xj. I was thinking, now would be a good time to upgrade. After doing some research I found that some say that it is better to just replace it with OEM. Your thoughts and suggestions, please!

I have never rebuilt a starter before. On a 1-5 scale, how would you guys rate it?

I had two spare starters here, put ended up swapping them both in within weeks of one another, took the original apart, cleaned it and put it back in, going on 10 months now. Rebuiding is the way to go. Might as well get used to disassembling if you play in the mud. Don't lose the bearing though.

Mostly rocks here in CO. Well that and snow. Is there a kit I can get or is it more of a "Take it apart and clean it" kind of thing?

I had two OEM starters go in my TJ. Bought a spare at the junk yard, rebuilt it, and put it in my TJ. The one I took out got rebuilt at my lesisure and put on the shelf as a spare. It is now a spare for my XJ.

Get yourself a starter at the junkyard, rebuild it and put it in your XJ. Then you have a spare you can rebuild when the mood and money are both there. After it is rebuilt, put it in the garage for a spare.

Like the idea, Think I might get a spare. But I will have to wait a while to get a garage. Thanks.

I know that feeling Jason. My garage has so many holes in the roof. Oh wait those are stars not holes. It's the gravel floor that really sucks though.

i bought a refurbed one from oreilly auto and if it starts fouliong up on me I just take it back and the replace it no questions asked... Do the same with other commonly worn parts due to wheeling, alt, sensors, brakes, hubs etc. just have to buy it once and your set!

Oreily is my fav store. Yeah creepers don't roll to well on the parking lot. Plus prop manager gets pissed when I do maint in parking lot. And it gets so damn cold here in CO, which makes workin outside kind of hard too.

That's what I did when mine went out. Got myself an O'reilly and it's so easy to change out it's not a big deal if it craps out.

I considered the rebuild route myself, but it seems the manufacturer's don't want you to do it. I couldn't find any parts.
