As some of you know I got a 97 TJ with 89k on the odometer. I was driving down the highway at 55 and slowed down to about 10 to make a turn and BAM one hell of a knocking noise and smoke every where. Well we pulled the engine out today to find a hole in the block. The rod cap was still in place not locked up and the piston was in good shape. And could see cross hatching in the cylinder. The rod broke and know body knows why.

JB Weld it up and go another 100K.

Seriously, sounds like it's time for a stroker.

Strokers are over rated. Have friends that did it and were not pleased with the amount of money spent / performance

Maybe there was a flaw in the casting from when it was made ??

Any dark, old, staining .... in the areas indicated by the yellow arrows ??

... as that would indicate a crack that been there a while ...

How many miles on the engine is my question.

damn wranglers.... see Jeep put the manufacturer flawed motors in wranglers... Greg I hope you anticipate dropping a cherokee motor in that thing!

They started building faults into them because the early ones were so reliable.

Nothing to indicate an existing crack

Bummer. But it looks very salvageable with a new rod and a set of rings. If that is you can plug that hole. Could be done I think with some nickel rod.

JB Weld, it'll hold together.

Or take this as a sign that's it's time for SBC.

I could never just rebuild a 4.0 they are awesome overall for their durability but not worth just a general rebuild unless there were some goodies thrown in the mix. Id just pluck one out if the local yard and go home and drop it in and be done before rebuilding one lol. That sucks on the luck with that..

That's crazy with such low mileage.

I have rebuilt the 4.0L before and gone near 200,000 miles on the rebuild.

I have seen welded cast iron blocks too and most will hold up for many years but I am not advocating that you do either. It is dependent upon your time, tools and skills.

thats an AWFULLY big hole to throw some JB onto... were not just closing a hole... the hole will be under a decent amount of pressure as well... and Ive seen that JB weld doesnt really enjoy hanging out with motor oil... they can play in a room together ...just not with the same toys!

JB Weld was a joke. I'd never ever consider that with something like the hole in that block.

Honestly, 4.0's are fairly cheap and plentiful. I'd throw another one in and keep on truckin'.

Of course it's a joke who in their right mind would think you could JB Weld a block?!?!?! Now you'd need to let it set up for a week, but you could JB Weld that rod back together. :timeout:
