I have a 98 XJ, and recently got an offroad bumper installed. The vapor canister and ball ( 4" x 8" box and 4" diameter ball) was not remounted.. and basically my vacuum lines are open. What is the simplest way to resolve this? Grr.

I've been a fan of screwing a screw into an open vac line. I did that on a Ford that I installed a short ram intake on and didn't feel like tracing the vac line and removing it/capping it.

http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS-Performance-Products/JEGS-Vacuum-Reserve-Canister/763083/10002/-1 check these out, one of them ought to work for you. You need the reserve can so your heater door will work among other things.

Ummmm doesn't having that open cause the engine to run incorrectly? Makes it lean or something?

Open vac lines diminish the vacuum to certain sensors and give incorrect readings to your ECU, thus less efficient running engine. Often resulting in less fuel economy, so that would be enough reason to seal vacuum leaks for me.(I'm cheap)

I just moved mine to the little bit of space beside the battery. I,ve always wondered what it was for but never thought about it when I was online.

I ran mine up into the engine compartment ad zip tied it on top of the power dist. box. Found alot of bad lines during the process so I shortened most of them and repaired the bad. Heater worked alot better after this was done.

Hey thanks alot guys. I'm going to pick up some hose and see which works best. Will definately let you know how it turns out.

My jeep is definately runnin a lil poor because of it. I agree w/ that. And my vent wouldn't blow out the center of the "forward" for a bit....

You can actually make one out of PVC. I was reading on a hypermiler site that this guy made one out of 3" PVC that was over a foot long. He did the math and had 3 times the area of his OEM.

I'm not saying you need to upgrade, but you could build one out of PVC that would be eaiser to mount out of the way.

Your avatar photo is modified in your user CP... link should be near top of page.

I have seen a stock vacuum canister that was only a "ball"... think it was on a 97 at the jy...

Hoping for a new cure from an old post! lol, 98 xj 4.0 surges than runs fine for a short while, then surges sputters for 2-3 miles than runs fine. I found the rear U joint had broke at some point and shattered the emissions canister next to rear of drive shaft. I have blocked them off except the roll over line to tank but still running like crap......any ideas???

First of all do not block off those lines, replace and reconnect this can cause fuel issues. Do you have a check eng light on ? Codes ? check fuel pressure at the rail ? When is the last time you replaced the fuel filter ? and lastly .. where is Traverse city Michigan ?
