That isn't too bad of a bend.. but overall looks like it is at least still usable..

aww no worries i'll bend it back :rolleye0012: still i'm a firm believer in his products. this was a freak boo boo and the winch only bogged down for a quick second

:mad0029::poke: OUCH!!! Those shock towers did look good though.. got to give him that much.. and it will look awesome when he gets it all done..

I wonder Matt.. can you bend that back straight without making it weak?? OR do you even really care??

I would think of a way to make it stronger...
bent once, bent twice.. might be broken on the third....

under normal use this wouldn't have happened, so after i get this bent back i'll add some angle iron to the bottom. Also i'm not gonna have a trailer attached and hope the trailer jack will hold the weight (like it should)

Yeah I can imagine that might not have helped the situation any... but did you at least get the Dango onto the trailer??

Hey at least it wasn't bent up for nothing.. I know that doesn't help the situation.. but it was a successful pull and use.. even if it wasn't what it was fully designed for.. LOL

Looks like you just did a supreme test of the strength. It only bent, I would imagine that lesser units would have torn apart or at least cracked.

I'm thinking you're deserving some sort of award......
No one has ever done that before.......
.
What position were you in for it to bend downward like that??

straight pull with a trailer connected to the hitch

Thankyou for the call.........and now I know the 'rest of the story"......
Excellent testimony for both the Smittybuilt & the BackBone.....

I agree that is quite a testimony for the backbone for sure.. Yeah it might have bent.. but wasn't being used completely for what it was designed for.. but as was stated... I think any other unit, would have probably broken off, not just bent a bit... Awesome work on that design for sure!!

I'm waiting on a call back from my sometimes engineer, after speaking with Matt, I think much greater force was applied than origanally thought.

bluedragon436
10-12-2011, 11:03 AM
you going to redesign it or just see if he agrees that a much greater force was applied??

DETOURS
10-12-2011, 11:20 AM
No redesign required.
I 'doubt' the circumstances will be repeated anywhere again, on earth. ;)

Their is no need to redo anything on the backbone. I would agree that the pressure that i applied (not on purpose) was multiplied by the hitch i was using to hold the trailer in place. It didn't help that the winch at one point pulled the durango and trailer together (which caused the bend) So if i can't straighten this one out I will buy another no questions about that! Sorry Mark i may ask for the homeboy hookup price :smiley-laughing021::smiley-laughing021:

Oh I agree that it doesn't need to be redesigned Mark.. wasn't trying to meant that at all.. was just wondering if that was you reasoning for wanting to contact your sometimes engineer... that's all I was wondering!!

I contacted him because he knows the math calculations......and here they are......

Sean is a Structural/Mechanical Engineer at a well know helicopter plant, he is very familiar with the BackBone.........After describing the situation and everything involved with what happened.....he estimated the following-

At the time of the bend, based on a pull rate of 6,000lb on the cable, aprox. 3,500 'FOOT' pounds of torque was being applied to the BackBone mounting system......(He followed that with laughter and stated 'Thats ALOT'.....He also stated that the way Matt had configured the pull, zero force was transfered to the truck, thus no broken bolts or movement, the BackBone's mounting plate took all the force, he followed that with a "He's Lucky" comment........ All that said, as far as no welds breaking, his comment was "you did good!".......So, I'll be sticking with the brand of wire I've been using, thats for sure!

Thats all I got.......;)

Mudderoy

I'd like to fully understand what happened here. I'm guessing I'm not the only one that doesn't understand and may make a similar mistake, perhaps without the "lucky" results.

How did the cable "attach" to the trailer and act as a winch block?

DETOURS
10-12-2011, 01:06 PM
It's my understanding, the 'swag' which connects the hook to the cable somehow caught the trailer, then pulled the trailer into the modified Backbone which was 'also' attached to the BackBone via added hitch mount and a 3" drop hitch was being used........

Thats about as clear as mud, help me out here Matt.

I'll tell you what, the 1st award you get is the HONESTY AWARD!

In the past, every once in a while........I'd get a call or an email concerning a possible part failure or something of that nature with someone exclaiming it broke or it failed........only to learn later, from the customer's buddy, spouse or even themselves post a picture or video of how the so-called failure actually happened.....IE: An individual in Mass. I knew, claimed his carrier only touched a tree one day while wheeling, broke it, broke the glass... 2 weeks later after I made things right for this individual.........a video surfaced of him backing into the very large tree at well over 5mph.....My fault??.....I sent him a bill.......Never heard from him again, never paid the bill......

It's a pleasure doing business with a Jeeper like Matt!

I can see the story's coming now "I promise I was pulling BigJim and his Green jeep out of a rabbit hole :mock:"

The rabbit was white and wore a vest and had this big watch in his hand and kept muttering "I'm late, I'm late I'm late for a very important date".

If I bend something as substantial as Detour's parts are, I'd just have to tell how the heck I did it and buy a new one. I'd consider that bragging rights. "You know that super beefy stuff I bought? I managed to mangle it !
