View Full Version : Any ONE modification you wish your xj had or came factory with?

So I was just thinking how wranglers got the rubicon, Sahara blah blah blah models and how there is much more control over options you have or want when buying a new(er) jeep and that led to me thinking what one modifications do you wish your xj had, either as a factory option or available as afrermarket or even custom? Not talking like roll cages, exo cages and 1 tons. I mean stuff that would still be market friendly when the xj was released in 1984?..

Mine would have been a removable hard top like the old broncos/k5 blazers.
What's the XJT communities opinions?

Mine is a Laredo so it has almost all the options anyway. But I would have been much happier with a D44 and 4:1 tcase

A turbo diesel

A quality turbo diesel ... as in a deal with Daihatsu or Isuzu ... instead of the Poogotts & VM that were used .... ;) .. :D

For me .... A PTO would have been nice ... or a bigger engine bay for all the electric winch batteries. ;)

Better rear axle (instead of the 35c)
with locker.
Better place for the spare tire
soft top??

from factory with 31s and 3.73 gears as a option.
diesel motor not the 2.5 gas in the us.
factory duel elctric fans.
and a SYE
and never should of had the dana 35. C 8.25 29 spline and dana 44 only with lsd in more rear axles or a must with tow package

bluedragon436

a turbo diesel (don't even care of the brand honestly.. )
4:1 TC
selectable lockers or even an LSD in the rear (on all of them)
Rubicon style option

roll down rear window like the 4runners
GOOD cup holders pre 97
something stronger for a front axle
3 inches higher FACTORY
a FRAME!!!
SYE
higher fender clearance
and I know these are based on what was cool in its day but they needed cooler wheels... the moabs look great and of course the canyons ALWAYS look good on em
better rear shackle design
sunroof
or even better yet a california top... FULL sunroof
removable hardtop like a 4 runner did in the 80's
a 500,000 mile warranty on power train!
Id say a d44 but they DID offer it on the 87's
NON c clip rear axle
a rebuildable front hub assembly
coil rear suspension
stronger bumpers like the TJ has
a better design for the spare tire to use a full size up to 35

Lol I'm a simple taste kinda guy and I would have liked to see a sturdier frame, unibody style half and half anything that was stronger. And a rubicon package... Would love to have some of those benefits but I give the hp30 and the np231 credit they take a lot of abuse... Mine did today at least and broke the linkage so I have to crawl under to get 4x4 till I fix it lol

Hahahaha I was just letting it go. :rolleye0012: But seriously one thing that you see as a necessity to improve your comfort, performance, appearance, etc of the xj. I like simple effective things if you say rear coils then buy a zj lol I like my xj for its simplicity and the rear leafs honestly I'm a fan of.. I actually wouldn't mind a xj with a 60 full width with 63 inch leafs up front and rear. But anyway back on topic. Lol

So let's keep this going... Now if you had an option to build your entire xj around the 4.0 what would you mod? The 4.0 has to stay but trans, axles, everything else can be changed on the xj just not the 4.0.
Also keep in mind the xj is unibody lol and that means no Rockwells because there would be massive "frame" work to do. Imagine this is for a rig you wanna build to haul your family in and to last for 20 years. Be CREATIVE!

Mine would be-
Replace entire floor with 1/8 sheet (easier than you think)
Dana 44 front
Dana 44 rear
Uni body rail stiffeners
Either th350 or 700r4 trans if that's even possible on a 4.0?
Leaf sprung rear
3 link front
Dovetailed front fender area
Tube fenders incorporated with built in rocker sliders.

Serious, but explain this to me. I went from 225's to 235's on the jeep and my mileage went up. My only thought is larger tire = less revolutions. I've noticed the tach turning under 2 grand unless I jump on it.

Because the xj was at that point obsolete and Chrysler had now moved on to the xjs full time replacements in the grand cherokee and future liberty . It is my OPINION that Chrysler may have planned on killing the xj sooner because the zj came out in like 93? And if it became the "grand" cherokee then it was meant to replace the regular cherokee. Would I have liked to see rear coils as an option only yes but I still like the leafs I know I'm not part of the majority cuz most hate them but its the simplicity of if you want a Dana 60 rear I can have one cut down welded up assembled and installed in a day (if all the required parts are there)

Chrysler planned to kill the XJ off by 95. Then the bean counters realized that the XJ was outselling the ZJ and it didn't make sense to kill off their most popular product.

Look what happened with the new wrangler, they started offering a stripped down version for 22 grand and they can't keep up. The Toledo plant is working two 10 hour shifts 6 days a week. They're also calling back laid off employee's.

I meant getting back to basics. A cheap basic wrangler is flying off the shelf. I cheap basic SUV would do the same.

Personally I think Jeep should drop everything except the wrangler, grand cherokee, and maybe the liberty.

Since the 4.0l is the cause of most of the dramas ..... ;) .. :D

I'd like longer fenders / new nose cone / moved crossmember ... so as to get a decent radiator and a proper shaped, fan shroud in there.

My build requirements are pretty minimal and since I havent busted a TJ or XJ diff in 12yrs - the 30/8.25 or 30/44 combo seems adequate ... except for the "C" clip and wheel bearing arrangement :bang:

3.5" lift looks the goods for me ... but 2" is adequate with a bit of careful line picking ;)

AW4 is a good box - if you keep it cool enough ... The XJ is my first, auto 4x4 ... and I was pleasantly surprised after years of stick shifts ... Switch control for a 1st gear lock is a handy thing but I havent done it to this one yet.

Im still measuring/thinking, a frame stiffener/tranny support/sliders/aux fuel tank setup ... but its not high on my list of priorities ....

I find the swing away spare wheel is a PITA most times - so the roof rack gets used a bit as well ... just depends on the day.

... and since Im never in a rush ... to get anywhere - or get "unstuck" .... One of those 12v powered hydraulic pumps and a hydraulic winch is still high on the wish list ...

OK ... Now lets see some posts of the more, wilder, fun stuff .... ;) ... :D
