View Full Version : Things that are called "Jeep" that shouldn't be...

I've been noticing this for sometime. People will call things Jeeps, when they are not. It's an easy mistake to make. People know Jeeps are rugged off road vehicles, so when they see something "to them" that fits this description they often refer to it as a Jeep. Generally the more rugged and uglier the more often it is called a Jeep by the "lay" person. :D

This really started getting under my skin with Josh, of "Destination Truth" fame called every vehicle they rented in every back water country they went to as a "JEEP" On one occasion he was correct. lol

What really got under my skin is their rented vehicle often dies while they are driving it.

So what have you seen mislabeled as a Jeep?

I'll start...

Was watching a movie the other day and they called it a jeep and it was definitely a late60s early 70s bronco.
The new grand Cherokee.... Not a jeep
I saw the advertising comercials for it and they were sayin go from sand to dirt to rocks all with the click of a button then show it driving over rocks I could drive a go cart over.
There is only one new era jeep that I consider a jeep and that's the srt-8 in any model its an option I'm fine with it just because I wouldn't mind having one even if its ifs and/or 2wd.

I think the liberty was jeep worth till they made it ifs up front it could have had a lot of potential. It woulda been sorta like a wrangler bastard child with an older xj or zj if it had a Dana 30 at least up front.

I hate the Liberty because it replaced the Cherokee. I hate it because it looks like a yuppy VW beetle. Nothing wrong with VW's but they are not Jeeps.

Also I like pointing out the Liberty isn't a real Jeep because the other admin here owns one. :rotfl2: :poke:

Yeah that IFS on a 4x4 is pretty useless, but then again the yuppys like it.

I agree I don't like them at all. All I was saying was that had jeep made it a real "jeep" it coulda possibly been a really good platform.

Compass and Patriot should not have Jeep badges. Any Jeep 4x4 model that doesn't have a low range, not a Jeep.

Compass & Patriot. Personally Jeep should have dumped everything but the Grand, Wrangler, & Liberty in the reorg.

Speaking of yuppy's. When I was shopping for tires last weekend, I was reading reviews online. Most tires that I would consider a decent all purpose tire for my Jeep either had stellar reviews or really bad reviews. I couldn't figure out why until I realized that the poor reviews were from yuppies that were expecting their light truck/SUV to ride like a car with a light truck tire on it.

I've heard people refer to Broncos, Jimmys and even hummers as Jeeps. I always immediately correct them, they are wrong and need to be informed of their mistaken information. When they respond "How do you know?" I just say "I own a real Jeep".

and yet if you listen closely to Wrangler owners, the cherokee is not a jeep....

this world is crazy....

That just reminds me of a personal thought.... what makes a jeep a jeep.... is it the engine ? is it the original parts ?
Is a totally modified jeep still a jeep ?

:rotfl2:I almost got into that argument with a former Wrangler owning coworker the other day. He asked what Jeep I had. I told him 92 Cherokee. He said I should have gotten a Wrangler. I told him the Cherokee is superior to a Wrangler in almost every way and we left it at that without me having to break it down into detail.

Our wheelbase is superior in most cases.

Drive train is tucked up higher. Have you looked how low the guts of the new Wranglers hang and they're already on 32's out of the box?

When Wranglers were sporting Lo Output 4.0's the Xj had the H.O

When Wranglers were sporting the 3-speed auto box the XJ had the comparably space age AW4

When Wranglers mostly all came with D35 rears XJ's were available with somewhat decent C8.25's and D44's

List goes on haha

hmmmmmm I don;t know if I can brague too much using your arguments...

I have a D35, I have the Renix (non HO) engine, I have small tires and I also have the supposedly crappy manual transmission ;) lol

But I like my JEEP lol

Jeep Compass, how bogus can you get, this thing is just a Dodge Caliber wrapped in different plastic and badged with "Jeep". My wife owns a caliber, decent , cheap car, NOT Jeep material even in the mall parking lot!

Actually Cantab ....

The licensed jeep design made by mitsubishi ... and mahindrah and other oddball brands ....

Are more "jeep" ... than a TJ, JK ... or any of chryslers other, allwheel drive station wagons .... :D

But I know what your saying about a swb 4x4 of any brand being labelled a jeep ... I had a heck of time correcting people when I owned a soft top F50 Daihatsu ....

Was always explaining it wasnt a little willys jeep to the ignorants ... and that it was better than one ... :smiley-scared003:

Personally ... I think "Jeep" branded stuff ... should be no frills, simple, reasonably heavy duty stuff ... and a comfortable go anywhere wagon ... like they have always been.

The recent blingfests with jeep badges are like new toyotas .... more grocery getter orientated than serious.

If the new "jeeps" are actually any good ... they wont need a jeep badge to sell ... so sell em as the chryslers they are.

Ive got much more need for a hose out interior and and cheap to replace 7" round headlights in a new vehicle .... than bluetooth wii thingymabobs and a GPS that sends me on roads I dont want to use .....

steph, you have the best year for Jeeps in my opinion. The thing is simple to work on and simple to diagnose. After 90 they became dependant upon a computer or scanner to figure out the problems and that made the skill of diagnosis un-required. Us old time mechanics were replaced by an electronic box which needed an interpretation of the spit out code.

Real mechanics are different than today's crop of parts changers.

The new JK's should not be called Jeeps. Jeeps dont come with v6's. They come with an inline 6

Such was not always the case. Our beloved XJ's came with V6 engines from 84 until the late 86 models and V6s continued until the merger with Renault in or about that time and the electronics we refer to as Renix was born of that merger.

If i may jump in on this one?

Anything IFS produced by Jeep isn't worthy of the badge!

And now for the sad, sad truth...

"The original trademark brand-name application was filed in February 1943 by Willys-Overland.[6] It is also used as a generic term with a lowercase (jeep) for vehicles inspired by the Jeep that are suitable for use on rough terrain.[7]

As the only company that continually produced Jeep vehicles after the war, in June 1950 Willys-Overland was granted the privilege of owning the name "Jeep" as a registered trademark.[6]"

Jeep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Jeep" was smart for grabbing-up the Trade Name.

So, technically as long as "jeep" is said with a lower-case "j"... :smiley-talk024:

How's the Newbie on xjtalk doing so far?

I'd gladly take the gamblers off of that red YJ. I've got 3 in the garage and need 4 more in order to have the Jeep & trailer match and have a spare.

Atleast Jeep is doing what the need to do. 22K for a new stripped down Wrangler. The Toledo plant is working two 10 hour shifts 6 days a week and can't keep up. I know afew guys who were even called back after layoff.

I used to have an old suzuki sammy with a non removable hardtop and some folks I worked with always called it a jeep and they insisted it was an old mail courier jeep... even AFTER I tok them out to show them the steering wheel emblem... I did WHEEL it like ajeep though the one year I owned it... flipped it twice in one day!
