Let's see what you can do for under $100 to make your rig look better or to improve it's performance.

Wrapped my steering wheel in 550 paracord. I got 300 feet for $20, and used maybe 50 feet. I gutted it by pulling out the inner cord and left the jacket so it would lay flat.

Actual military grade 'ripstop' digital camo material for my headliner recover. $20 for 4 yards @ 60 inches wide. I'll need another 30 or so for glue and supplies.

Mag Light mount. Easy to grab as you're jumping out.

Not sure if I'm going to mount a CB trucker style or build a small sheet metal box for a switch panel.

Those are all I can think of right now that I have done to my Jeep.

I've seriously thought of a spacer. But I probably should put the 2000 intake on first. I read somewhere that the older intakes hold 2.6 liters of water and the 2000 intake holds 4.3 liters of water.

If you try to confirm this, lets hope you do it while it is still off the vehicle. :D
As far as the spacers go I have heard they may increase throttle response a bit, but other than that they are a glorified paper weight. Throttle body spacers work when the fuel is being injected via Carb or TBI.. as the idea is to give the air and fuel a bit more time to atomize. With a direct injected engine it just gives the air further to travel.

None of my cheap mods are cool.. so I won't post them.

However I am surprised nobody has mentioned hood vents yet..

You can build a cargo rack to suit your needs like this...

http://deezentertainment.com/images/Jeep/cargofinished2.jpg

total cost was about 90 bucks

Different spot for the maglite.. all in all $20

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/317038_2187820173964_1200841298_32033040_182546566 9_n.jpg

If you shop right a CB radio/antenna/mount which cost me about $100

I am also in the planning process of building storage box to mount on the front of the sub box, and also i like the idea of making the aluminum piece or something similar to make the side cubby hole useful.

New ground points ... stainless steel bolts, star washers & nuts instead of crappy self tappers,
Bonnet (hood) hinge spacers,
Omix-Ada fanclutch ... # 17105.03 ... not a real HD but somewhat better than stock,
Bypassed rad, tranny oil, heat exchanger ... and fitted a 10"x10" oil cooler.
Relay and heavier wiring for the headlights,
Proper eyebolts in the rear cargo area for ratchet strap tiedown points,
Replaced bumper mounted vacuum cannister ... with a smaller, neater, TJ one on the front crossmember,

....and .. and .. and ... Same as with most people - theres a never ending list of bits & pieces ...... :D

Did you just trim the housing? I've got a fan from a 3.8 Lincoln (supposed to be like 200 more CFM) that I've been trying to figure out how to mount.

Crap, you had me excited. I've got a spare 97+ fan along with the 3.8 Taurus fan. I've often considered trying to find a way to disassemble both fans and drop the Taurus fan motor into the xj fan with the xj blades. I realize it would flow less air, but then would be a bolt on mod.

I'd still love to see some install pics and more info on how you wired it.

just used that tupperware PDC, and associated switch panel to put a switched 12volt source to each red wire, and a chassis ground to the black. The chassis ground is actually connected directly to the negative battery terminal now that i think about it, on the passenger inner fender... I just leave the low speed circuit on at all times the ignition is on in the summer, probably leave it off in the winter tho. It gets DAMN COLD up here. lol

Its just a hack and tap. Cut the output shorter, drill and tap a hole in the middle, bolt down yoke. Then you install a stock front driveshaft on the rear.

Ok I gotcha. I was thinking it was some kind of adapter that slid into the stock slip yoke and allowed you to run a front drive shaft.

This isnt anything fancy but it is simple and i like the idea behind it. When i replaced my floors i noticed there are a shit ton of spot welds holding the unibody together and that over time they will break.. ( when i cut out my floor there were several that were not properly fused from the factory you could see where they arc'd against each other but didnt fuse) So long story short weld the unibody rails to the floor. Dont weld them more than 2-4 inches at a time without letting it cool down or you will have a potato chip for a floor. Also there are A LOT of seams on the unibody where they are fitted and spot welded together these seams are much easier to get too but weld them too but dont let them get too hot once again. This includes welding leaf spring hangers to the unibody as well. It will save your xj, if you do a fair amount of wheeling bumpy stufff.

I forgot to mention using the axle side, sway bar link brackets, for the rear sway bar, as bar pin eliminators for the rear upper shock mounts. I did it and seems to work pretty well. no pics tho...

Tell about that console... Is that a cheap mod?

Tell about that console... Is that a cheap mod?

It is a stock and called a "mini" console. I have a base sport model (with 5 speed) and do not have the console between the seats. This is fine because I build a cup holder and CB holder that mounts there.

The mini console is commonly found in the MJ (Comanche) but appears is at least some of the Sport models.

Ive got the 96 base SE model with 5 speed and it has the full console... I wouldnt mind having one like yours and then making a armrest cupholder farther back just to get rid of the bulk in between the shifter and the ebrake

I also swapped a WJ brake booster and master cylinder into my '87. The original was a single diaphragm, and was terrible to start with. The WJ booster is dual diaphragm, and increases the brake assist power. I got the booster/mc from the wrecker for $20, and he just gave me the metric brake lines with a braided stainless portion for nothing!

old and new side by side:
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g343/oliethegoalie32/IMG00285.jpg

note the difference in push rods, I cut about 2" off of both rods, then welded the end from the old one, to the rod on the new part. This is b/c the hole on the old rod is larger, and it has a "flat" on the end that actuates the brake light switch.

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g343/oliethegoalie32/IMG00284.jpg

had to move my washer fluid bottle forward about an inch, and bent the "pinch seam?" on the fire wall to allow the larger booster to fit. The hardest part was making the metric lines from the new M/C work with the standard fittings on the prop. valve. Which is no sweat with the right tools.

all bolted up, initial line fitting, things are a little more cleaned up now.

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g343/oliethegoalie32/IMG00288.jpg

DON'T FORGET TO BLEED THE BRAKES AT ALL 4 CORNERS, STARTING WITH THE FARTHEST AWAY FROM THE M/C TO THE CLOSEST!!! CHECK FOR LEAKS, AND REPAIR AS NECESSARY!! PERFORM THIS MOD AT YOUR OWN RISK

Overall this has been the best bang for the buck mod I have done on my XJ. I have gone from nearly messing my drawers in a panic stop, to being able to lock the front tires up if I want. Braking force was greatly increased, I recommend this swap to anyone who has the original single diaphragm booster.

I was a bit bummed at first, but now I like being able to do what I want with that area. If I had a console it would just probably be full of junk anyways. I plan on re-doing my current setup though to give me a bit more room and will probably move the CB between the visors. May even look at moving the parking brake over a bit.

A-pillar lights
I made these last week. I used some 1/8" steel i had in some junk in the backyard, so that was free. Each mount is one piece i bent to shape, so no welding. I bought some nice hardware to mount them at about $15. The lights are Hella 500 driving lights that i got from a cf member for $52, never used.
Total just under $70 plus paint.

Looks good. How much better is the stopping power?

Also, is that a 2000+ intake I spy?

It stops sooo much better than it did with the old part. I don't have any actual stopping distance measurements, but she stops in a hurry now! It is night and day, the difference between the two. Best mod I've done so far (other than tires, locker, suspension).

Yes, that is the newer intake, along with an APN header, which I guess are also cheap cool mods, but the Hesco TPS adapter doesn't quite fall under this criteria. Should have just made my own...

I've got a 2000+ intake manifold in the garage. Not sure how much it will do with a stock exhaust. Also, I'm curious how it affects your vacuum with the larger area.

Do you think the intake/exhaust mods are a benefit?

they seemed to make a decent improvement for me, but my engine is bored and cammed. The stock throttle body on the renix is very small, going to the larger newer one helped a lot. Also have a custom mandrel bent 2.5" exhaust with just a Thrush glass pack, that exits in the stock location. Been debating a bored TB for a while, but there are more pressing matters at hand. lol It hasn't run properly for a while, a stick came up and broke my coolant temp sensor for the pcm. She runs really rich, which isn't that bad at higher RPM, but at idle it burns the eyes and nose. lol

Last year my brother bought me the Hoodlift. Its been great to have, so much easier. Quadratec has the kit for $63. Easy installation and quality parts. Plus its safer and i don't burn my hands on the hot hood trying to get that prop rod in the hole.

theres an absolutely FREE "Factory" Smartphone holder in ALL our Jeep Cherokees. Its the panel just to the left of the stereo/heater/air conditioner controls, and just to the right of the steering wheel. The panel on the left of the insturment cluster is our idiot lights bank, and then the panel on the right of the insturment cluster, the left ones "Twin" is, for ME anyways, a "Factory" smart phone holder. Just wedge it in there, depending upon which model smartphone you have. I actually used to keep my regular cellphone in the same spot. Ill post a pic if I MUST, but Im sure we all know the panel Im speaking of.

I'll have to double check, but I don't think that is how the 97+ dashes are.

All I can think of in that area is the factory clock, I dont see anything that would "hold" a phone.

well... the space under the original clock on the older model xj dashes is basically free space. I have this area covered with some velcro tape, and have done the same to the back of my I-pod. I get in, stick it to the dash, and don't have to worry about it bouncing around, or being out of view/ reach. I'm sure you could wedge some smartphones in that area, assuming they have an otter box or some other type of cover on them. Haven't tried my I-phone yet, but hopefully soon!

I was thinking you were talking about a hole there.
Ive done the velcro thing before.

Well, Ive got my own lathe....so not much to tell.

Take it off, pull the sensors, plate and shaft.
Protect the bearings from metal chips, mount in a lathe, bore out restriction under the plate just to the bearings to make it 60mm just like above the plate. You can go to 62 if you want, but you would have to make/source your own plate. Believe me Ive been searching for 62mm plates for a while and cant find em.
I also glass beaded the exterior...again using ear plugs or vac. tubing to protect the bearings. Cleaned it well, regrease the bearing, assemble, adjust the plate, and install.

Always Flash the ECU by grounding the pos. cable for 30 seconds, reinstall the cable, turn key to on position, turn headlights on, turn off.
Computer will now relearn the new modification for the next 50 starts.

Believe me, you wont be disapointed!
