While talking with a friend this morning, the idea hit me. I want to gauge interest before I invest too much time and effort.

How likely are you to use an exclusive Jeep Auction site to buy/sell/trade Jeep parts. I'm thinking a cross between ebay and Craigs List.

Sounds promising.

Sounds promising.

The working idea is something run by Jeeper's for Jeeper's that cuts through the crap and all the people who are selling overpriced Jeep parts because they have no clue what they are really worth.

This would be a great idea if we could get some interest. All ive noticed on ebay is a few good deals, but the rest is just absurd some of the prices they want.

Check out www.elderlyiron.com. That's sorta what I'm thinking of as a starting point for my design.

Looks good but you have to accept and pay a fee just to see what they have. That seems a bit harsh. I would like to see what stuff they sell and the price for said items but not enough to sign up for a recurring charge.

I think the best way for this type of site is for it to be free at first until enough interest/visitors use the site then allow those already registered a 90/180 day period until they have to pay while from said point, start charging for all others... Or maybe a limited view site before having to pay...

That's what I'm thinking. Maybe free for all, but plaster ads all over the side bars. I'm thinking a membership model for like $2 a month removes the ads and lets you post all the auctions you want. It would be free for the seller.

The idea isn't to get rich (at first) just create something for jeepers by somebody who understands what it means to be a jeeper.

Back to the point at hand. I may have to go domain shopping tomorrow.

Or maybe I'll start hacking code and use an existing domain.

you could do the same thing sirus radio did at its inception. Offer a life time membership to generate quick revenue then later new subs are month to month

sweet, cant wait to see how this is going to turn out.. just a thought, it would be cool to have a wanted section. people are looking for certain things, and maybe someone will have it, or can go source it. i know there are want sections here and there on forums, but if you had it on a busier site may generate more leads on things.

I purchased the domain today and I have a graphic artist friend working on a logo. Looks like there are several craigs list clone's out there you can install. That's the next step.

Here is my take on it. To be profitable at any point it seems like you will need vendors who sell new parts. The jeep community is a tight nit group. And usually if somebody has or is looking for a used part he or she will find a local buddy who has it. I could be wrong though, I was once before :)

My experience with CL & ebay is slightly different. Start asking your buddies for a spare tail light or outside mirror. I sold a non heated 97+ XJ power mirror for $40 on ebay, because it is very common form them to get ripped off. Same with tail lights.

How many of your buddies have a spare 8.8 laying around? I know not many of mine do. I'm not discounting what you are saying, I'm just saying that not every part is a phone call away.

Here's a Teaser of the pre alpha version .001 of this project. I've spent most of the morning figuring out the layout. I figure I need to write a user regisration/login setup, Posting Ads, and a response feature. Once I get those finished I can start really alpha testing. Currently alot of the information is place holder info so that I can gell the layout.

All should be fairly simple to write in PHP with a mysql backend. I'm thinking I can modify existing bits of open source code for most of the 3 main modules.

like the style... are you going to keep it craigslist style like that?

I want to keep it as clean and simple as possible. The goal is to have it show up and work well on a mobile without having a mobile site.

What' I'm seeing is the main body area to have some search and other options where you can drill down for what you want to browse. The left side are going to be quick options to search for say Cherokee Parts. When an ad is placed, it will have check boxes to allow the quick search to work.

I started shopping the idea to some developers today (one of the benefits of working with 50+ developers). I know I could write it all, but me spending 120 hours versus them spending 25 speaks volumes.

sooo whats the website name we should be looking for? and also is there a place we could put non jeep parts for upgrades like axles? I see the non jeep parts spot but I was thinking more for upgrades rather than a dude with a ford ranger looking for headlight bezels

The left hand side of the screen cap has a link for "Non Jeep Parts". This is where you'd sell your 8.8's, D60's, and such.

The domain's up and has a landing page that looks similar to the screen cap. All of the links are broken and I haven't finished the CSS style sheet. Really there's nothing to see but a single page of HTML.

Considering that the Jeep market is huge and very brand loyal I think it would be great.
Personally if a Jeep auction site existed I'd check it daily along with emails etc.

Standing up the site isn't the problem. It's getting enough users from every region to make it worth while.

ebay is called BAY because it's creator was hoping to get enough people in the San Francisco bay area to use his site. He got a billion dollar lucky with his Labor Day long weekends worth of work. rofl.

yep ebay = east bay which would be oakland original home of the raiders. also home to the giant salt lick where most of our "sea salt" comes from. oh yeah and the giant onion mounds. dang now I miss my first house, the good food on grant street, the fog...
