after I finish my jeep im going to have a dana 35 just sittin around that NOBODY will come pick up let ALONE pay for so Im thinking Im just gonna build a utility trailer...
Since there is an AWESOME wheelin place only a few miles from me Id like to build a REALLY innovative setup and something that REALLY is a conversation piece that being said I want everyones input with pics and everything... I was thinking maybe a rolling BBQ grill or a tool trailer or whatever but definitely along the lines of offroad excursions... and NO this trailer will NOT be attached when out on the trails!

Something like this would be good.. even on the trail.

Im thinking that even tho using the D35 is good use of materials ... Its an awful lot of dead weight to be hauling around ?? ....

A conversation piece ?? .... Had a chuckle at a camper trailer show last weekend whilst looking at this blingfest ... and then choked when I heard the price ...

Makes my ol 7x4 with a tarp chucked over it - real good value .... :D

OOOOOOOOH I like this one... wish it were big enough for all the family
perhaps a "bunk-trailer"

You just said 'family'......so my idea of a flat deck and a brass pole just went out the window.

I like the camper idea, esp. if you'll actually use it.
A nice multi-use, lockable utility trailer would be good.
Nice thing about the D35, you'll have spare shafts for someone!! ;)

Hmmmmmm you said spare shafts for someone.... that got me thinking about a spare parts trailer... having one or two of the most broke parts u joints drive shafts and whatever else I might brake!

I'm thinking that a roof top tent above a kitchen would be a good thing

This was the other one I was thinking about. Has a fold up tent.

One of the blokes down here built one almost the same ... with a rooftop tent on top for the kids.

A couple of sailtrack or retractable awnings for extra covered area - and you're good to go.

This sort of thing is the most common down here - in trailer/tent setups ... with huge variations in brand designs/layouts and quality ....

I will admit that the trailer set ups down under are far superior than what we have here. They really know how to make'em down there. Sadley to pricely to ship here.

Wasnt showing off what we do :o ...... but the pics in some of the advertising may provide some ideas that you fellas might find handy.

just google search .... campertrailers australia ... The Sth Africans do some interesting stuff too.

Some of the gear here is also just low quality imports from china ... reflected in the pricing ... ;)

Personally .. I think lots of the tricky and fancy slide out stuff is detrimental ... If something breaks/rips ... it makes the whole thing dead weight - till you get to a town with someone with the gear to make a repair.

well here is the dilemma the trailer that Im building is one to drag to local wheelin spots that I can drive my jeep to... so a camper may not be needed BUT the whole LUNCH grilling idea sounds good to me and hey who KNOWS how late i'll stay out at the parties at the parks! I dont know keep up the ideas

I like this guy's build.

That one looks great.
I would use a trailer for spare parts/tools, extra water and some extra food.
Anyway, here we do not travel with trailers, if we need more space we usually put it on the roof or buy a bigger car :D
A trailer is a PITA here, its need its own license/yearly test and you can not leave it anywhere, it will be stolen... :bang:

I want one like this.. I think it would be nice to have an axle setup with the same bolt pattern as your XJ that way you will always have spare tires if needed. But I think building a trailer like this one that way I can store spare parts, as well as camping supplies.. Then I can have an empty XJ while running the trails and still have my stuff secure..

I am not against a trailer. But the one pictured above is just too short. I have pulled one so short and with something like an XJ with a longer wheel base it is just too small to back up with. Also, a trailer needs to be wide enough to be easily seen with side mirrors and tall enough to be seen with the center mirror.

After pulling and towing C-17's and C-5's around for years.. nothing is really too much of a battle to tow or back up.. I'm not saying it would be easy.. but I could def. manage.. I don't need a large trailer.. just need to find the parts to build one similar to the one I quoted above.. that would be all I would need..

same here about the yearly stuff and being stolenI just chain mine to an oak tree thats near my window!or just remove the wheels when not in use
plus that saves the tires from dry rotting

Geez what do yall take with you?? I personally see no need for a trailer. Especially with a XJ. But if ya a build a cool looking one I'll still give you a  :D

A little trailer would have been very handy when we went camping.

I have mixed reservations about trailers and camping. On our last trip, I was sure the kitchen sink was in there somewhere. We were pretty full. But if we had had one, we would have had to cut the wheeling short. But if I was headed to the dunes and packing sand tires, then a trailer is a definite plus

About the only reason I would like to have a trailer if I was going to be taking quite a bit of stuff on a wheeling/camping trip... would be so I can have a clear Jeep once I setup camp.. but still have my stuff secured in the trailer back at the camp site.. I don't need that much stuff.. but would be nice to have all the camping stuff out of the Jeep for hitting the trail.. but still secure at the same time..

heres the best part..." ok we are here, now lets unload EVERYTHING and unpack the jeep so it aint overweight.. THEN we can go wheelin"
ORRRRR
ok were here... unhook and lets wheel!"

Yes, that's 1/4 of a Cherokee & enough scrap to be close to 1,000 pounds.

Future plans are to strip it, paint the frame satin black and the tub OD green. Then a set of wooden sides to make it deeper and a canvas top with bows to make it look like a WWII Jeep Trailer.

I would like a canopy for camping. No setup just park and snooze. Thinking of aluminium?
