well after the heavy rain that killed my trans:indifferent0020: i have to swap them over...no big deal this is my 3rd one... my question is how hard to do swap in my driveway.... last time i did it it was on a hoist.... hoist has a sick tj on it at the moment and cant see it being available anytime soon... so should i do it in driveway or wait....tis been 3 weeks since the drowning...:sad0147:

wait to you see the colour of the new trans....

I agree, if this is your third one, you've got it covered.

Grab a friend, it will go faster.

cantab27

yep but standing up working on it is better than laying on cold ground...soft with age maybe..........

new water proofing will be done same as the starter after the drowning before this one

Doing it in the driveway is not that bad. Just make sure you have a good floor jack, and 4 good jack stands.

Wayne, I use a tranny jack. Don't really need it for getting it out ... gravity you know. but real handy for getting it back in. The pan will sit on the flat top of the jack, and it has wheels. Just get ya Jeep up good and high to start with. Cuts down on the beer though ...

I've been known to put my wheel and tire under the body, so just in case all else fails I'll at least have that much room. :innocent0002:

If you're going to keep treating that Jeep like a boat, it might be worth the trouble to switch to a standard transmission...

Yeah I don't blame ya there. I guess I'm showing some of my own fears in my comment. If I knew how to rebuild a auto I probably wouldn't be so anti-auto. Standards are just so much more simpler and the vehicle can be push started.

Headlights buggered ... or just full of mud & frogs ?

A good slosh around with soapy water followed by a de-mineralised water rinse and left to dry out of direct sunlight ... might bring em up nearly as good as new ?

Not to sounds like a nay sayer, but all the major axle companys I deal wiith say dont use em. Besides the seal you want to fix is in the axle and this wont help.

So does this mean that the seal in the axle should take care of keeping water and crap out which makes these pointless?

4.3LXJ
09-30-2011, 11:38 AM
The axle seals on the open knuckle Dana axles have always had the water and mud problem inside the tube and loosing seals because of it. They went to this design because it was cheaper to produce. But when I go to my new front axle, it will be old school closed knuckle. They are much easier to keep the water, sand and mud out of the shiny parts. As for the add on seals, I have not heard anything one way or the other. I do think though that they would take a beating from any axle vibes out that far on the passenger side and fail early.

Too bad you don't live here mate, I could set you up a good closed knuckle front end that would not give you any more trouble. I ran one for almost ten years in the Pacific Northwest mud, kind of like the NZ wet climate that never gave me any trouble.

Might be a bit of a problem in NZ. But here I could probably find the early Waggy axles. Not sure if they have the pumpkin on the driver side or not. but they can be changed over with cutting the tubes and rewelding with some trussing. No bushing for a top link though, but you can run a three link. I have for quite awhile. Land Cruiser stuff would be the best and easiest stuff to work with I think and has the best aftermarket support, like with extra heavy duty knuckle wipers etc. If you want to go that route, I think you could do it cheaper than the spindle conversion, but I don't know about NZ prices.

Sounds like you have a bit of work ahead of you Wayne. Good luck.

I have also seen those seals and if I did much off road water crossing I would look into them. As long as they don't hurt anything, then hopefully they would help. But like others I have not heard good or bad about them.

RCV and Superior offer something similar, I used them and found that they prevent sedimentary mud from accumulating in the tubes.

More comments from Pete Trasborn (JP Magazine):

Pete Trasborg I used the Superior ones in the front of my MJ too. If you are a mud guy, or go where it is wet, I think they are worth it. The catch is, if you don't grease em regularly, they will do nothing for you.

The seals themselves are not hard, but you have to pull the axles. Some use a really long extension and socket to push them back in

yep.....

Sounds like you got a LHD one with the connections on the air filter side ??

LHD XJs have the oil lines hooked up to the heat exchanger in the cool side of the radiator ..... and the aux oil cooler on the crossmember ... is an option for additional/better cooling.

RHD XJs have the oil lines hooked up to the heat exchanger in the hot side of the radiator :rolleyes: ....

.... and the aux oil cooler on the crossmember ... would apppear to be fitted as standard - to offset the dumb RHD oil line hookup .... not coz chrysler was generous to RHDvrs. ;)

You'll be better off plumbing up the new rad & aux oil cooler ( or a proper replacement oil cooler ) than having the RHD setup .....

Dont bypass the rad and rely on the piddly little factory aux cooler alone tho ....

Some of the fellas over here have used the LHD radiator ... just a matter of running some tranny hose extensions with hose clamps.

I bypassed the whole schemozzle ... and just run lines from the tranny to a big, proper cooler, in front of the rad ... and back again.

O2 sensor is on the exhaust pipe. Are you talking about the MAP sensor?

cantab27
11-11-2011, 02:58 AM
yep o2 on front exhaust ..rears gone as have no cat,,

Mudderoy
11-11-2011, 09:03 AM
The MAP sensor would make since. It uses engine vacuum. The O2 sensor wouldn't make a noise unless it was an exhaust leak. And I think that would sound much different than a squealing noise.

The O2 sensor reads how much fuel is being burned by sampling the exhaust gasses, then the computer adjusts how much fuel is being squirted to the injectors.

cantab27
11-11-2011, 10:56 AM

Wayne, I hate to be negative but I've never seen any good come out of high pitch noises in electronic equipment, especially something that normally is silent. My experience with electronic devices is that shortly after the high pitch squeal the "magic smoke" comes out and the device is rendered useless.

Hey mate

I have to agree about funny noises coming out of the TCU. You are not supposed to get those things soaked.

But after thinking about this a minute, I would suggest that your problem may not be mechanical. Does it correspond to when the engine is fully warm? Not sure about the AW$, but some trannies, like mine anyway go into different programing when the coolant temp sensor signals a fully warm engine. You could test this by pulling your tstat an driving it.

11-18-2011, 09:44 PM
Sorry mate, lazy fingers. Pull the thermostat and drive it. If my theory is correct, it won't act up because the engine will never completely warm up. If it does, then I would suggest a problem with things like pressure sensors or something similar. The humming you hear may be the result of a short in the transmission electronics which you will have to find with an ohm meter.

The reason I ask is that with the plug being accessible like it is, you can quickly check for shorts in all the electronics in about 5 minutes or less. If you find one, then a good wiring diagram will tell you what it is. If you were near here, I could do it for you in a jiffy.

It can, among other things. Those sensors don't like water. If ya got some in there when you went swimming last, then you probably toasted it. A detachable snorkel tail pipe may be in order. Like our military rigs had. The Mighty Mite has a three bolt flange to bolt one on the end of the pipe.

well when she was fired up after the swim , half the river came outta the exhaust...

will see if i can run one before i buy one......

cantab27
12-02-2011, 11:52 AM
well the plan is to park next to this beast next Saturday and start swapping bits until it stops the hesitation......

http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/rr52/cantab27/jeepin%20and%20bits/Image0408.jpg

there is a river run tomorrow ,same river as to where i parked it in the puddle..this could solve everything...just make sure its real deep and cant be seen, drop it in and leave it there......

It is a breach of our code of ethics to turn a perfectly good XJ into a boat anchor

Gotta be the O2 sensor Wayne. I think you are getting the miss because it is too rich, like having the choke all the way closed on a carb. I know they are not cheap, but they are really the heart of the fuel injection system, and they can wear out and do not like water.

Your ECM was not under water too was it?
