Surely everyone knows how to manually retrieve codes from jeeps right? Key on/off 3 times n count the blinks

Only on Renix era XJs, the rest require a code reader.

ok here's the deal you can check codes manually up to 95, In 96 they became OBD2 and you must use a code reader to access them.

I believe your right.I think I read that before. I've never tryd it on a renix so I can't comment 1st hand but I know for fact it works on obd & obd2 jeeps. My bro has 96 obd2 & it works.

I was under the impression that the renix were pre-OBD and that you can read codes only while the engine is running and you have to actually testing the specific system.

But I would love to be able to get some more insight into my engine though.... So I will try that tonight and see what it does lol (I am just curious)

and I found this link as well
http://www.troublecodes.net/chrysler/89-95jeep.shtml

so you count the blinks but what if the code is 2000 you count 2000 blinks ?
I read somewhere that there is also a code in the blinking lol

i have renix and it works, it will not work on OBD2 as OBD2 pcm's do not have a diagnostic function built in like the OBD1's do
some 96 and 97 will allow you to read codes this way but after 98 your into a scanner.

It'll blink 5 times pause for a second than 5 more blinks. It'll pause 2 seconds then blink say 1 time n pause for a second then blink twice. So its sayn 55(start code) 12 is battery has been disconnected in last 50 starts. I can't upload the codes or what they mean & I don't have them in from of me neither.

I have done it on a 97 grand cherokee. Instead of a blinking light it displays the actual code where the digital odometer is. Not sure bout 98+
