The transfer case and AW4 use ATF (automatic transmission fluid) the rear and front end should be 90wt gear oil.

The AW4 does not use "ATF". Yes, it uses "automatic transmission fluid", but you don't want to buy any bottles labelled "ATF" for the AW4 - they're the wrong type of fluid.

Fluid bottles marked "ATF" on the front are usually for Chrysler transmissions, and the AW4 is, for all intents and purposes, a Toyota transmission. You want Mercon/Dexron III, and only Mercon/Dexron, for the AW4.

Not to pick fly poop out of black pepper but as per Chrysler:
NUMBER: 21-014-07

GROUP: Transmission

DATE: October 16, 2007

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21-010-06, DATED APRIL 14, 2006, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDES THE ADDITION OF THE ASIAN WARNER (AW4) TRANSMISSION AND ADDITIONAL MODELS AND YEARS.

SUBJECT:
Automatic Transmission Fluid Usage ATF+4 (Type M59602)
**1989 - 2001 (XJ) Cherokee**
NOTE :**AWA (Asian Warner) transmission are now included in this Service Bulletin. ATF+4(R) is recommended for AW-4 (Asian Warner) transmissions**

Lastly the AW4 is similar to the Toyota A340 but is not the same and both are made by Aisin Warner not Toyota.

[putting on my crotchety old man pants] I've seen that bulletin from Chrysler, but I'm still not putting ATF+4 in my Aisin-Warner 4. ;) [pants off, er, something...]

I only mentioned Toyota is because you won't find the AW4, or Aisin-Warner, mentioned on any fluid bottles, but they will say, "For Chrysler transmissions" or "For GM, Toyota, transmissions", etc. In terms of the car brands you'll find listed on the bottles of transmission fluid, the AW4 would fall under Toyota, and not Chrysler, even though like you said, it's not actually a Toyota transmission. :happy0180:

Yeah I read this had more to do with Chrysler not wanting to stock both types of transmission fluid. I only put Dex/Merc in mine as well. In fact I put ATF in it and found out what I just mentioned and drained it and refilled it the same day. I'm sure there is still a little ATF in there but not much.

Typically ....

Dex III in the gearbox & the transfercase.

90 in the diff ... or heavier if it gets a workout ... Additive needed unless its a premix oil that already has it in it.

cant we just use the universal lubricant
1 part 10/40 motor oil
1 part coolant
1 part 80/90 wt gear oil
1 part generic ATF
I mean wouldnt this clear it all up for anything?
I had special lubricants in my jeep when I got it
the transfercase was lubed with H20 lubricant
the motor was a mixture of 6 parts 10/30 2 parts coolant
the tranny was full ATF of sorts
the gear oil was.....well it smelled like stagnant swamp water

So, is that the recipe for P/S fluid, or should I use brake fluid for my steering pump?.

I recommend Dex/Mer with tranny and 231/242 I think 80/90wt in diffs is correct and PS fluiid in PS pump. I like prestone coolant and Mobil 1 in the 4.0L. Hope this does not offend anyone's sensibilities.

Chrysler FSM Specs for both the Front & Rear Axles...

Grocery Getter: .... 80w/90

Heavy Duty & Towing: 75w/140 Synthetic ... plus additive for LSD

I just run an ordinary 85w/140 LSD oil in both ......... :o

I bought a reman transfer case recently and the rebuilder recommended full synthetic 10w30 engine oil first, ATF as a acceptable but 2nd on the list.

This will come in real handy as I plan on draining and replacing all fluids shortly after I get home.. thanks!! (before anyone asks.. yes I have changed my oil a few time in the time I've owned it)..

I almost wonder if the rebuilder of your TC recommended that so he could get some repeat business.. can't stay in business if people don't break their shit.. LOL..
