Yep, that's what it says in my 1998 Owner's manual. :D I am assuming it's the same for the 1999.

apparently the guy who owned my jeep before me had a different manual... his mustve stated H2O... when I opened it up to replace the stretched out chain it was kinda of surprising to find ANY liquid in there but even MORE to find WATER!
Anyone know what would benefit to use 80/90 gear oil??? Ive never HEARD of anyone use that... but it IS just a butt ton of gears in there getting meshed all around, whats the benefit of ATF over gear oil?

I am using ATF-4.... should I go back to Dex/Merx ?

I read a post about a TSB that Chrysler put out saying to use ATF-4 now...

ATF+4(R) - (Type 9602) is being used as factory fill for Chrysler Group automatic transmissions. ATF+4(R) is recommended for all vehicles equipped with Chrysler Group automatic transmissions EXCEPT FOR THOSE LISTED IN THE NOTE ABOVE.
NOTE :ATF+4(R) must always be used in vehicles that were originally filled with ATF+4(R). DO NOT USE ANY OTHER FLUID. NOTE :ATF+4(R) is backward compatible with ATF+3, ATF+2, and ATF+. Additionally, ATF+4(R) can be used to top off vehicles that used ATF+3, ATF+2, or ATF+. Mopar ATF+4(R) has exceptional durability. However, the red dye used in ATF+4(R) is not permanent; as the fluid ages it may become darker or appear brown in color. ATF+4(R) also has a unique odor that may change with age. With ATF+4(R) fluid, color and odor are no longer indicators of fluid condition and do not necessarily support a fluid change.
But I also read that this was so Chrysler wouldn't have to stock the Dex/Merc III. And it was pointed out that Chrysler doesn't make the AW4 transmission. I don't know I just stuck with what the owner's manual said to use as this is my daily driver.
I know I'm talking about AW4 here and not the transfer case, but again the owner's manual.
