It is not hard if you have lots of tools. You have to pull the unit bearing out, sometimes that takes a puller. Then it is like changing any other ujoint once you get the axle out.

They really aren't that hard to change out. The hardest part is getting the hub bearing off. And it would be a good idea to do both. Might go ahead and check your hub bearings and brakes to see if they need to be replaced while your at it.

Here are a couple sites that may help you.

A simple way of getting the unit bearings out is to loosen the bolts , but not remove, soak unit bearing with PB Blaster wait an hour then useing a large agressive hammer beat the bolts from behind. I know sounds crazy but an old Jeeper told me to do this along time ago and I did and have done it this way ever since. Yes occasionally you do have to replace a bolt or two but other than that never had an issue.
Be very carefull when removing and reinstalling the axels you have seals down inside that tube you DO NOT want to hurt. Guide them in and out as level and straight as you can. When installing coat them with 90wt to help the process and lubricate the backside of the seal.
I also agree that you should do both sides as long as your there anyway.
Good luck you should do fine

If you have front ABS brakes, take note not to damage the exciter rings on the end of the axle while pounding out or in the u joints. They are cast and if you wack one it will shatter.

Beating the bolts from behind does work but you need to buy a socket to leave on the bolts. You will most likely trash the socket but at least not ruin the bolt heads. If the hub has been on for a while which is usually the case, you will have to swing for the fences with the hammer.Put Anti-sieze compound on it all when assembling.

The three bolts holding the unit bearing on, I had to use 1/2" ratchet and socket. My 3/8" socket split on the second bolt.

Just my experience, have a couple sockets available - just in case.
