So last weekend I busted my radiator. I decided to go ahead and yank it out today, in prep for a "new to me" one that i will get later. Now looking at the pics you can see it was having a hard time cooling even before it busted. I'm proud of myslef. It takes some talent to get a rad to look like this when your in the middle of a historical drought. The metal that crimps the tanks to the rad busted and thats where its leaking (the GREEN circle)

I did that too once, only I lost the rings in my motor. I don't feel so bad about it now.

So I put in a 2row radiator. Now the Jeep runs warmer. Not hot just around 210 all the time. With the old single row it stayed around 180 most the time. So I am thinking that with the thicker radiator comes less air flow through it. Also there is alot more metal to get hot and stay hot. So in my opinion if all other cooling componants are in good shape, it seems you would run cooler with a single row rad. However if anything is getting weak (such as a waterpump) the single row rad probably couldnt keep up.

So what is stock? 1 core or 2?

Mine came stock with a 1 core, I put in a stock 2core out of an xj with the HD cooling option

Actually the reason it runs warmer is because you have more water to cool and under hot conditions it dosen't "hang" long enough to cool it down to where it would a smaller volume of water. Also and I'm sure you have but get as close to the 50/50 ratio of water to coolant as you can to much coolant can lead to running warmer also. You could check the fan clutch to be sure but as I see it it's just a larger volume of water causing the issue

Im running water, with one bottle of "purple ice" coolant. And the larger volume theory does make sense. So why is a HD rad an upgrade if it makes you run higher temps?

Sadley its really not and has alway been a huge misnomer , but if you can get the additional volume of water to cool it will make a differance , Higher t stat, electric fan running full time. The water / coolant needs to be held in the rad long enough or have the fan capacity to cool it. What T stat are you running ?
