Trying to find the correct sensors -
Oil pressure switch
and
Temp sensor that is on the side of the TStat housing (I notice in the
parts catalog there is an optional plug for the one on the top/back of the head, so why do I have 2 sensors?)
Local dealer is useless, they don't even have diagrams

For the temp one is for the PCM and one is for the gauge. Later they went to the one in the thermostat housing to do both jobs.
In 96 they had one number for the gauges with idiot lights and one for the full gauge cluster.

The one is in t stat is both on your year , the optional one in the back is for the earlier years, the oil pressure switch should be down by the oil filter here are the part numbers :
Without Oil Gauge 56026719 With Oil Gauge 56026779
If you need the one for the temp let me know and I will post that number for ya !

My bad I thought you said you had the 2 temp sensors.
I have both on mine because I changed out to the better head...I put a mechanical temp in the rear

is there a difference in temp readings?

Oh, I was assuming the one on the housing was different. Interesting. Mine's all gauges for oil and temp though.
I may just leave the front alone for now - my temp goes to 3/4 and goes back to 1/2 randomly within a minute every now and again when my veh. is good n hot (stopping/going at mailboxes), so I may end up having to repl. the radiator according to a coworker. Damn, and she's only got ~55 thou on her and I just changed the rear sensor. Yes, that's not 155K.

Ice, I do have 2 temp sensors.

Payless, I see the oil sensor under the hood but the catalog doesn't :D
Thanks for the numbers

Oh, the reason I'm changing the oil switch is b/c the pressure goes back and forth too quite alot, like when pressing on the pedal
from about 1/5 or 1/4 to 3/4 on the gauge. I didn't think this was normal...

After changing my thermostat last week, I noticed the temp sensor on the housing was different (bigger) than the one on the back of the valve cover, maybe I'll give it a swap, I'm still getting strange readings. So Payless, post away!

Your right on the money if he has the 95, his specs he listed say 96 so I'm confused on the year or has he replace the t stat housing so he has the ability to run an additional sensor?

Here's the link in RockAuto.. don't know why there's so much discrepancy?
I do have a '96.
What's weird is that RA doesn't list the *rear* sensor near the back of the head towards the FW. Gotta love it!
Got the rear sensor from Advance and O'reilly's had the front one like 5 bucks cheaper
BTW, what's the front one for anyhow?

96 was a weird year, right. What was the possible mix? 95/96 or 96/97?

Front should be the computer pick up and the rear for the guage in the truck. Its very possable that its a mixed year XJ or that the prev owner did some mods after all jeep stands for just everybody elses parts. Post a pic of the sensor and I'll see what I can do from that if you want.

RCAXJ

Computer pick up? So what does it tell the computer to do?
BTW, the number on the old sensor was the same as the new one
It all looks like factory wiring to me too, the only thing I see aftermarket
are the fog lamps. I'm beginning to find strangeness with this XJ, as
I just found out I have 2 O2 sensors in the back of my cat converter (hope that's
not a dealer part, else I'm screwed bigtime) trying to track a rattle issue after I just put on a Flowmaster yesterday.

xj4life2

The computer sensor tell the compute how hot/cold the engine so that the computer can adjust the fuel trim ect ect. Why they used two is beyond me but they did.You should have two O2 sensors one in front of the cat and one behind the one behind monitor the front one, again redundency but thats the way they do it.

RCAXJ

The dealer converter has only one port on it, plus it's 580 dollars . Looks like I'm off to find someone with some good welding skills.

RCAXJ

Off topic, but that extra "O2" sensor I found was apparently a heat sensor for the EU market or something... got rid of it, new cat installed today, no more rattle!
I'm beginning to think I have a "grey market" vehicle - All these problems I'm having for someting that supposedly has 60K on it. Dealer's getting a call from me tomorrow, and I may have an investigation launched, as I've already replaced (needed to, not wanted): Serp belt, radiator, both hoses, water pump, TStat, fan clutch, both temp sensors, valve cover gasket, oil filter adapter o-rings and finally the cat converter just to keep it running decent. Oh, and the neutral safety switch. 60K? Probably not. Mech. pointed out the worn rubber on the brake pedal too.
