I have a 95 with an NP231. I'm trying to order a rebuild kit and notice that there are 2 available. 1 is for a 24mm wide input bearing and the other is for a 16mm wide input bearing. How do I determine which kit I need? Are there numbers on the case that will tell me or do I just need to try and measure it? If so, what's the best way to get the measurement?

Thanks in advance,

Erich

I found this on novak's website:
NP231 Versions
NP231's are consistent from 1988-1993. Beginning in the 1994 model year, New Venture changed the front input bearing from a wide version to a narrow version. By 1995, the changover was complete, but individuals with 1994 model year transfer cases can't always be certain of which bearing their transfer case may actually have, unless they pull the front bearing retainer or even fully disassemble the NP231 and check this input gear bearing.

The early NP231 uses a BD50-8 bearing, measuring 24mm wide
The later NP231 uses a 6010-N bearing, measuring 16mm wide

So that would make me think you need the 16mm one.

Thank you for the response. I searched many websites for the answer to this question. I forgot about Novak and all of the information there. I'll get the kit ordered on Monday. Guess what I'm doing over the Memorial Day weekend!!

Hopefully the weekend will end with a big, happy BBQ! This will be my first time doing this job. The plan is to pull it, install bearings, seals, and chain, and reaseal it on Saturday. Sunday install and then off to the Rockies / Cardinals game Sunday afternoon. Monday is my contingency day!
