I experience some rust above the front window shield.

To solve this problem I want to detach the strip around the window.
How do I do this???

I have never done it on a 96+, but on my sons 89 I started it in the center with a screw driver and after I was able to get my finger underneath it I used my hands. The pieces just popped right out. Started with the vertical piece on the drivers side, then went to the horizontal pieces. Take a digital picture of all the joint connections before you start. It will help with the reassembly. The piece in the center of the horizontal, that just covers the joint. The long piece is actually two pieces and the center piece is covering the joint. Removal is actually simple. You will be surprised at the amount of filth under the trim pieces.

a screw driver will work but they also make a special tool just for this that won't bend the aluminum pieces http://www.denlorstools.com/home/dt1/page_1935_20/kd_tools_kd_2038_window_molding_remover.html

If I remove the trim...
Will it leak?

I don't care for the chrome and need to replace the windshield down the road anyway.
Being in Portland, it does rain on occasion = more than not, but just an annoying drizzzzzzle usually.

IIRC those are glued in. So you should be able to remove the chrome

I guess worst case = oooppps!
The PO had used window calking to deal with a leak over the steering wheel.
...blue gel everywhere.
I need to clean that up and swap the windshield too, but was going to just deal with the chrome for now.

Yep, glued in. The previous owner of mine used silicon around my windshield too. The leak was from a bad glue job on the last windshield. new windshield cleared it right up.
