Well I installed a K&N filter tonight, and the Fire kit I won from the site and thought, why just do that?
So here are a few pics of what I did to the air box.
Enjoy :D
FYI, My rig runs great with Mudderoys Firewire kit. :driving:
Hoping to gain at least 5 miles per gallon with what I did tonight. Wish me luck :mock:

good job... just curious what is your idea there ? a bigger air inlet for better airflow ? Is that correct ?
Dang we will never know if your mpg improve because of the ignition kit or because of the better air lol

Well as of the ride to and from work, I had just shy of 3/4 of a tank. and got home tonight after putting on about 39 miles I am still above half a tank. As for the not knowing which one gave me the better mileage, your right will have no idea. BUTT! I am very impressed with the Fire wire kit from Tony, (Mudderoy). Much better throttle response and more get go. I gaped my plugs at .054 And seems to be the right spot. The K&N filter is a bit more noisy than stock, I would assume it has to do with the modified air box. And FYI? I don't do deep water.
Thanks for reading my post people :D

Oh remember you have made a big change to the ignition system. Your ECM needs to relearn. If you didn't reset the ECM you need to.

The hole he cut is still below the filter, so I dont think he would need another filter.

Notice any pickup in the butt-dyno?

Accualy I did as I was telling Tony on the show on Wednesday, the throtle response on the bottom end is way better. With 3.55 gears and 30 inch tires I can now get the tires to squak when stomping on the gas at a light. It could always smoke the tires but the bottom end is way more responsive now.
As for the air box mod, I cut a 4 inch hole in or around the factory air opening. Then I put a 4 inch pvc floor drain flange over that and hot glued it and then installed 3 #8 screws. You can really here her breathing now!
End milage for the week was 268 miles bouncing on the E! crazy incress. Thats almost a 40%!!! I was getting about 148 miles to a tank full before. I am very happy with the results.
Thanks to Tony for a great contest! Codoos to you, and yer wife for getting on yer ass to get the Kit in the mail.. lol
Peace:pray:

Get that speedo gear changed, so you can get an accurate mpg measurement. Yeah you can do it on the gps too, but you'll have to remember to turn it on every time to drive anywhere.

Ok update. Last tank full I got 254 miles. I got my A/C fixed woohoo!!! So I would assume that this is why i didnt get as good of gas milage. I'll take the less 7 miles for a frosty 45* ride on a 102* day like yesterday here. 98* today. :yack:

About 275 miles with just over a 1/4 tank left.. should be at 300 miles at 1/4 tank. Wonder how much this mod would help me? Maybe up it to consistent 22 mpg? hmmm.. will have to try something similar one day.

Wow so the Performance Distributor 4.0Kit and air box mod was a huge boost in your MPG then?

Guys,
You really have to say how many gallons it took to fill up with. Stating how many miles you got to a tank means nothing.

Pretty much, but the standard tank was 16 gal. 20 was an option that was ordered by almost all dealerships from the factory

You should be saving some serious $$$ in fuel prices now. That money should appear shortly.

That was in response to prerunner1982. The first was in response to the OP, weldman. So no, I did not miss the reply.

Simply measuring how many miles you get out of a tank and reporting that back here does nothing to convince me.

Ok been awhile, butt here it goes. Last official figure on average with this mod is 285 per 20 gals, thats almost 15 to the gal. Not great but way better than what is was getting.

If that is a concern, you need to modify the stock air box anyway. The intake is just below the head light level in front, famous for causing hydrolocking. Then you need something like a snorkel or cowl intake at the least to prevent that.

senatE
10-01-2011, 01:59 PM
yeah i know about that. but im not sure why anyone would want to do this. do you offroad with your jeep alot or go near water? with this mod.

prerunner1982

The idea was to get better performance and MPG, not so much better off road. However, as long as you don't hit the water at speed it would be fine.

I was never really impressed with the K&N panel filter. I've got a spare airbox, I'll have to try the airbox mod.

prerunner1982
10-01-2011, 09:36 PM
The K&N Air filters aren't generally recommended if you driver in dusty conditions often. Apparently the reason it flows better is that it filters less.... and if too much oil is used it can get sucked into the engine and mess up the MAF sensor I believe.

I swapped my K&N out for a paper filter and never looked back.

Driving style will do more for MPG than any mods will do.

I wonder if the airbox mod in addition to the 2000 intake manifold I have and maybe a bored TB will help with MPG. I've already opened up the exhaust.

I've got a vac leak that I can't track down. I think it's in the dash. :(

Or with almost 300K, it doesn't have much vac left.

Do all of your vents work? If it is under the dash I would imagine you air vents would not operate correctly.

It works on all settings. I just get some air out the defrost at all times. In the morning when I take off, I can hear the door slap shut when I let off the gas.

If the leak is under the hood, I can't find it and the system seems to hold vac for atleast afew hours.

Only other option is that with nearly 300K, I'm low on vac.
