I don't know so this is probably more of a question. If it jumped timing and it didn't put a valve in the piston, shouldn't it be a simple matter of getting #1 top dead center, then verifying all the timing marks? If they don't match then unbolt the chain turn and adjust.

I guess this may require head removal.

A larger concern would be why did it jump timing. Personally as hard as it would be to do, I'd take it back and get another one. On the replacement I'd tear it down and check all this stuff prior to installing it. Or better yet put it on an engine stand and do your compression test prior to installation.

What has happened to you is my greatest fear about a junkyard engine.

Take it back and get another. It would be worth the time to strip the eng. down and do a full inspection of it on a eng. stand...do a valve job, maybe new rings, etc...basically put a brand new engine in and be good to go for another 100K.

I think his plan was to get rid of it once he got it running.

A couple years ago my friends idiot drunk/druggy father got his Durango stuck really bad and his over reving caused the same problem. I pulled off the timing cover and found he sheared off the pin that keeps the camshaft gear in place. I put a new cam in it and that solved the problem.
