im not 100% on this but they redid the xj in 96 i think and im almost positive that the gas tank shape changed and where the fuel pump goes in at.. Once again not 100% but for some reason i remember somethin about this

from what I can find, both are 45 psi pumps. I"ll keep checking until someone else that knows for sure posts here for you.

well the basket that it mounts too might be different, but looking online the pumps are the exact same for both years...

As far as the psi output goes, it will work. They put out somewhere in the neighborhood of 65# and then the pressure is regulated down. The question is whether it is early or late 96. They changed the tanks and sending units then. Up till then, GM made the tanks and sending units, not sure after that.

my issue is that 96 was regulated in the tank be4 96 was regulated on the rail.

the 96 year was a change over year where some were the new style and some were the old style. you'll need to check and see which you have. This is pretty easy; if you find a regulator on the rail it's pre mid year if there isn't one it's post mid year and the regulator is internal. you can always just bypass the rail mounted regulator to use the newer style.

You are going to have to do some custom work to do that. You would have to remove both regulators first, on the fuel rail and in the tank and then plumb in a line in the sending unit to return the fuel.
