So a few weeks back Jim rene and I went wheelin at creekside and I was out inthe lead and rene stopped to snap a few pics of another jeeper going through a little mudhole.
So I decided to venture out a little bit... long story short I sacrificed my passenger rocker slider and my whole front clip and both fenders...
Sooooo that all being water under the bridge I decided to hit up the ole JY in search of parts for replacing.... the ONLY decent setup I found was off a later model 2wd so I decided to take the plunge and FINALLY build my fenders and front clip the way I really wanted to.
Over the past few yeasr Ive seen designs that Ive liked and wanted to incorporate into my jeep and NOW I have to opportunity to do just that...
So here is literally what was left of my front clip... I have not removed ANYTHING in this pic...
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1106.jpg
Notice the nice hefty dent behind the side marker!:boohoo:

During removal of the fenders I found a little issue that right NOW is no biggie but will be a PITA later when installing the new ones.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1107.jpg
after all the damaged parts were all removed.... take a gander at that passenger fender.... chicks dig body damage!?!?!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1108.jpg
ok so NOW on to finding and repairing any damage that occured in my wreck a few months back...
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1111.jpg
Cant really tell here but this is passenger side grill support
Its bent up a little and over as well... had to smack that back into place!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1113.jpg
Also figured it was high time to replace the winch and drop a new coat on the ole bumper!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1114.jpg
I opted for this stuff I found at home depot for about 8 bucks a can... Ill be the guinea pig.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1115.jpg
came out LOOKING really nice but how well will it really hold up?
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1116-1.jpg
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1117.jpg
the new winch... I bought some wire to relocate the solenoid box... but I was short by about 4 inches... aint that the story of my life!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1118.jpg
here is where I opted to locate it since my firewall is already filled up with other things .
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1119.jpg
Tony dont get all excited but here...
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1120.jpg
ok so NOW onto the part I been pondering for a few years now...
Anybody ever seen the Genright kit for the TJ's? well there is one it that offers a SWEET fender grill... ( no not the bling ghetto kind) but it was a cool BACK LIT fender grill
Looks like this!
http://www.genright.com/images/products/TFF4600_MULTI_md.jpg

So here is my cut out
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1121.jpg
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1122.jpg
I was on the hunt for something to make the vent look good and I didnt wanna opt for the typical strecthed metal crap and be ghetto cliche...
I was at home depot looking around aand could not find what I was wanting so I decided to leave but STILL decided to drive around back to see what trash they threw out... its always a good plan because THIS time I found EXACTLY what I was wanting in my mind!
Some perforated sheet metal!

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1123.jpg

here is a little glimpse of the setup mocked in place with blue tape
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1124.jpg
Ive heard mixed reviews of this due to the fags that put those chrome queer ones on their fenders... but I liked the way these looked!
Anyhow now on to "de-tony" them
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1125.jpg
WHEW:eek: for a minute there I thought I couldnt wheel it anymore
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1126.jpg
So here they are with the vents in place and everything painted up!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1135.jpg
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1136.jpg
And here is the front clip... Its hard to see it but I decided to paint the grill with the bedliner THEN hit with the color to add a little bit of durability
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1139.jpg
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1140.jpg

Thats all for now! tomorrow I will be installing everything so more pics to follow!

I am anxious to see it finished..... looking interesting....

What do you think the fender grills are going to be good for ? Do they bring more air flow or is it just for look ? (genuine question there lol)

The Rustoleum bedliner paint is not too bad, this is what I have on my once chrome bumper.... and the patch of black on my read passenger side..... I tried to wire brush it and it stayed there.....

Fenders are looking good... Are you going to throw any tubing into it... or just leave it standard fenders with the vents?? Either way... looking good, Scott!! Kind of interested to see how the spray on bed liner holds up... as I was thinking about purchasing it as well for a few projects with my XJ!!

Looks cool man. I would like a follow up too. How did you like that bed liner spray? I have used the duplicolor and it started to get chalky after a while.

When are we going to get some 'after' pictures?

Right now
Had to remove the doors to make it easier to install the fenders

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1181.jpg

and there is the LED strip
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1183.jpg

New winch all wired up except the stupid wireless setup... damn plug pins broke
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG_1185.jpg

guess I need to paint the rest of it now to make it all look fresh

and yes the dent on the driver fender was already there... like I said it was the closest to perfect I could find

No on to make tube fenders to protect my labor... oh yeah and my investment

Looking good... How did you like the rustoleum bedliner? I prefer the dupicolor brand, but its getting harder to find.

Did you notice the red paint that is still showing on the front?

yes that grill is a PAIN to tape off... I think I may just take the three pieces off and paint them bed liner and leave em black
Also thinking the fender vents will be black as well

ok 5 months and three off roading trips later... the rustoleum bedliner is holding up really good, SO good in fact I opted to use it for the interior as well. its held up to winch cable chaffing and rock rash pretty good

bluedragon436

Guess this gives me some more options for doing my interior... What all prep did you do before you applied it?? And did you use the spray can or the roll on stuff??

XJ4IV
09-28-2011, 12:24 PM
its all spray can and basically after removing the carpet you might need to extend some electrical lines up out of the way and as for prep I just bought a wire cup wheel for my angle grinder and went to town, after that I literally washed the interior of the jeep as I would the exterior then dried with towel and went over it with alcohol... no jim not vodka but isopropyl and gave it a good rub down then I used a 3M adhesion promoter you can get at most parts stores. I used two cans to attain 4 coats fot eh passenger area... I didnt line the cargo area yet as Id rather just mess up the carpet anyhow back there, but Im sure one can will do 2 coats in the rear cargo area
