Front drive shafts for XJ 4.0l

Are all front drive drive shafts for 4.0l XJ's the same. I can get one from a 96 model, mine is a 99. Oh yeah its for a hack and tap :-)

I know that they are different from a manual transmission to an automatic. Not sure about the years though.

I can't say for sure JC, some differentials have a tag on the center section, if the numbers match I'd say the odds are good, or if you can get both axles to compare, count and mic the splines and measure the length and go from there. good luck;)
