View Full Version : Dented down pipe!

I never looked at my Cherokee much for many years. When I did I noticed a dimple in the exhaust down pipe. I didn't like it much but I heard/read some where that this was a common thing and didn't hurt performance.

I couldn't imagine that anything that disturbs or limits the flow of the gases would do anything but hurt performance. I understand that a certain amount of back pressure is needed.

Anyway my little dimple was increase to a near pinch after some off road activities back in the summer of 2010.

Before I waste my time and money should I get a replacement? Would it be better to order one online, or have one installed at a shop?

If it were me, I would drop it off at the muffler shop and tell them you want a downpipe built bumped up to a larger pipe diameter, last one we had done was $70, they made the pipe welded it all together and rehung the entire exhaust system.

I think the dent occurs when the dana 30 pumpkin comes in contact with the exhaust down pipe. Does anyone know of a fix for this so it doesn't keep happening?

I was thinking that as I was typing the question, good, maybe I'm set now.

That is a common problem with that D30 pumpkin where it is. I had to do some gymnastics too to make it clear. The exhaust shop idea is a good one. At least they can tell you if it can be done.

FYI: the downpipe comes "dented" from the factory for clearance. They're all like that. Unless your factory bumpstops are damaged, your trackbar is out of wack, or you swapped in a larger axle (like a D44), it'd be hard to actually hit the downpipe as it is stock.

If you're running taller-than-stock bumpstops, you can replace the downpipe with an un-crimped one without any problems. Some replacement headers come with one depending on the vehicle's year model (the Borla header for my '95 came with one), or you can have an exhaust shop build you a replacement. I'm not sure if there are any aftermarket downpipes available by themselves.

Had the same thing happen to the down pipe on my XJ. The exhaust shop just heated it up and massaged the dent right out of the existing pipe. I was getting a new muffler installed anyhow.

Damn I wish they had offered to do that to mine.
