I found a late 70's camaro with vents on the quarter panels I thought might be a good candidate for the hood as I haven't found any turbo LeBarons around here yet.

Has anyone seen or used these before or see any problem with them? I didn't see anything from a quick search. Doesn't mean it wasn't there though.

never heard about these one....
I am not sure how you would fix them. the Lebaron ones have the screw hole and a lip, not sure from the picture these have the same.
And the openings look big to, unless you are planning on adding a protection under them for rain and stuff.

But I am sure they would look good....

and definitely if you end up doing that... let us know how you did it, how it went and especially take plenty of pictures ;)

By the way, not sure if they are the same as Lebaron, but mine came from a New Yorker ;)

Those look great. Can you post a pic of the bottom side of them? They would look great on/in the XJs hood.

The pic I posted was one I found online. I haven't taken them yet as I was wanting to research them before I bought them. I think these are from '78 and '79 Z28's. So far I am thinking I might go back to the salvage yard and pick them up this week. If I do I will post pics of the underside.

Thanks, that will be the determining factor for transplanting them into an XJ.

I think the LeBaron's and New Yorker's are the same. I've been looking around at anything that could be used. Even the front grill portions from '00-'03 Grand Prixs, but they may be to small. The only concern I have about the Camaro's is the size of the openings as you pointed out.

I don;t think the size of the opening is much of a problem IF you plan to make a drip pan under it....

Most car fenders are curved. Make sure these vents are flat before you get them. The XJ hood is flat. It would be very frustrating after you have these set into the holes on the hood to find out the vents are not flat.

Good point. I don't recall them being that curved, but will check them when I make it back there.

Tried to get these this morning, but was becoming more of a pita to get them off. I would need to remove the whole fender to get to the back half of the vent, part of it lies behind the firewall on the fender. I did find that there is a mounting ring that goes behind the vent on the inside of the fender. Six studs pass through the fender from the vent and held on with nuts. They might have a slight curve to them, but the fender in that area looks fairly flat.

I'm going to see if I can find a set from another source. The yard I was at did not give me a good experience with a broken part I pulled for my side mirror.

those will look sweet on your hood. the rubber gasket in that pic is the retainer, it goes on the inside. A heat gun used carefully will allow you to flatten them if they should have a slight curve. I seem to remember those being almost flat if not completely flat.

I finally found a set on e-bay that look like they are in good shape. I should get them in next week sometime, but with work being busy I wont get around to messing with them till end of June. After I get a good look at them and decide if thats the route I want to go I will make sure to do a write up on the install.

I was thinking about using the vents from an 80s Trans Am hood, never got around to putting them in my Fiero. I think to keep rain out I would go get body color magnetic sheet like people use for temporary signs on car doors. But I think I will wait to see how Camaro vents look before I try anything.

Ive seen some folks use the early 80's datsun turbo hood vents... only thing is you gotta find TWO cars as they are not symetrical...
here is the turbo version
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1689/2881/4221440009_large.jpg
and here is the non turbo version which I guess you could use but it just doesnt seem to let much heat out
... well a search on google didnt yield many results for NON turbos but basically in this pic the BOTH look like the one on the top
http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/m/mCxhhraEkusyO0OyveMO0Bg/140.jpg
and NOW looking at em... they are BOTH assymetrical so I guess youd HAVE to get the non turbo ones to make it look good..

http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/m/mCxhhraEkusyO0OyveMO0Bg/140.jpg The bottom one has a NACA style vent at the leading edge. There were some 1970's cars (camaro, transam, mustang) that used just a NACA vent at the rear of the front (brake cooling flow). another way to get these is to just make your own, they aren't hard to form in aluminum, just make a hardwood form and get out your body hammers, you can lip it for on top or underneath the hood mounting.

I have seen a photo somewhere of someone that used just the lower one only on the hood over the intake/exhaust manifolds.

I also saw the lebaron vents and am thinking of picking them up as a backup.

another way to go, if you are up to doing some fabrication in metal or fiberglass would be this shape. http://www.xjtalk.com/picture.php?pictureid=2416&albumid=232&dl=1307064134 mount the open end towards the front and you have an exit venturi effect NACA duct that will suck air out from under the hood. Mount them fairly close to the radiator and you will have better out flow where you need it.

So I got them in today. I'm glad the guy stripped the gold paint off before he shipped them. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c169/KH01GTP/IMAG0280.jpg

Placed them on the hood to get a visual. They are fairly flat, but there is a little bend at one of the corners. However, I know it will be very easy to flatten out where needed.

Work is really busy so I probably wont get started on this project till July.

cool, if they are plastic you can flatten them easily with a heat gun or old hairdryer. those are going to look sweet when your done.
