Dirty=check ingine light/clean=no check engine light?

Ok here is the situation. The xj has had a check engine light since i bought it. It will come on about 15 min after starting it. Stays on until you cut it off. If you start it right back up, it will come on. If you let it sit for a little while, it will not come on for about 15 min. Well the other day I sprayed the engine with the pressure hose at the car wash. Ever since then no check engine light. I checked and can't see anything loose or disconnected. And all my gauges are reading the same. Any ideas?

you had a bridge of dirt. the washing got rid of it.

have you tried to read codes? on-off-on-off-on within 5 seconds? CEL flashes, count them and got error codes, end with 55
