Summer is coming and I have heard that xj's get a lil hot under the hood in the summer. I know that lots of people have used the old lebaron vents but I wanted to do something a little different. I was thinking of installing one of these to help cool things off a little. Your thought.

That is what I was thinkin. Not to big, cheap, bolts on not tape. All pluses in my book.

It won't let you make a big enough hole to make a difference.

This hole was too small....

Good I got my point across. At least in my experience hood vents are a joke.

I will say my goal was to decrease under hood temps for normal driving, not slow and torquey. So if you are doing hood vents for daily driving, forget it unless you are willing to make some major holes.

I have NO problem with cooling on the trail, even in near 100 degree outside air temps. This wasn't the only mod I made to the cooling system though.

What about fender vents like the 80s Trans Am had? I think it would help the flow of hot air out of the engine compartment and give a totaly different look.

Maybe, but I'll add this. Hot air travels up, right? So even under pressure it's still going to want to rise.

There is minimal area on the fenders for a large enough hole to mount a set of trans-am scoops without some internal obstructions. Good idea but impractical I think.:headshake:

Do vents or a scoop that you like the looks of because you are wasting your time if you think it is going to help any overheating problems. Find out what your overheating is caused by and fix that. The venting is only band-aiding the problem.

Think death wobble and a steering stabilizer. Sure the stabilizer helps, but all it is doing is masking the real problem (like vents/scoops for heating problems on your XJ). If vents were really needed, they would have been offered from the factory.

You hear about people who claim cooler running by up to 30 degrees or more all the time...on the internet. Ever meet one of these people in person, or better yet, see the temperature gauge on their Jeep?

In closing, sure venting will help...a very little bit. I put LeBaron vents on my Jeep, I hardly notice a difference. Tony cut almost his whole hood away, he still has the heat problems he has had. Do the vents look cool? Yes. Do they offer miracle cooling cures? No.

I am sure there are many who will argue the above. What is written is from my personal experience, not what I read on the internet or what a friend of a friend told me.

I do agree with you but I'm doing the cowl Induction for the looks.... I dont have heating problems and I live in Florida... I do agree that the vents may help kool the engine faster when its shut off to let the heat out.. but driving, its not really going to help to much...

the objective should be to get more air flowing through the radiator, race cars position the radiators for best flow. My race cars would hit 300+ if we had to run behind the pace car for a whole lap and the car had two radiators directly in the air flow. I think for the xj you would be better off cooling wise to go to a really good (expensive is a key word for good cooling it seems) aluminum radiator with at least a double core. the xj came with a single core radiator. I also think twin electric fans would be better than one mechanical and one electric. these would help cooling, vents in the hood are minimal at best for cooling, scoops are more for air induction for better atomization of fuel. some NACA ducts properly routed in the front fenders, near the radiator would probably offer more air flow than anything through the hood. Just my two cents and a nickle to spare.
