Put a different end on the welder cord. Very easy to wire up, and you can get the end at home depot or lowes

I made one. You probably have a 50 A machine on a 30 amp circuit. That means you won't be able to run it full bore. But you will be able to use 1/8" rod no problem. You can make an adapter by getting the 50 A plug and a 30 A receptacle with a short cord in between.

I got the 50 amp plug and hooked it all up, Ready to start fixing that cosmetic issue on my front hoop... IN MY OWN GARAGE tomorrow!!! Gotta have SOMETHING to do while I wait for the cable guy and the gas guy ... Might wanna hold off on the welding while the gas guy is around LOL... I can see it now, the FIRE DEPT welcoming me to the neighborhood!

wellll today DAY ONE in the house... I had NOTHING to do wut WAIT for the gas guy and the comcast cable guy sooooo I decided to GO TO TOWN WELDING!!!
Everything I wo thats metal is now connected
I really like using this welder its a simple concept and Im honing my skills with the arc distance and the angle which to lay the bead down, I was able to fill in a 1/2 gap too, Thats where I decided to work on the settings, I found that somewhere in the 40-70 range works out nice...
I DO have one wuestion and 4.3 you might be able to answer this , everyone told me that when welding to cast like the differential that you gotta get it REALLY hot, soooo today while I was messing with the dial I decided to crank it up to 220... that was FREAKING AWESOME!!!! anyhow would that setting get the job done and be strong enough and SAFE!??? I brought the 60's home today (they been at a friends house) and I introduced them to the new welder... the got excited! I think the FRONT axle got an erection cause it just STANDS ON END NOW!
Anyhow I just wanted to share my awesome day of playing with my new welder... Oh yeah as far as the wiring thing, I talked with the electrician doing the installation across the street ... homeboy GAVE me an outlet AND a breaker I also took some advice to have the outlet as CLOSE to the breaker as possible... so I placed it on the other side of the wall a total of 18 inches of wire was used~!

You don't want to get too hot. The rod will act like a cutting torch with too much amperage. When welding to cast, I use nickel rod. Lay down a nice wide bead because cast is brittle. Nirod is not cheap, but the best to use for this.

See I knew he could help me out, what amperage should I select.

Nickle, start low & work up........theres a bunch to consider....start on scrap.

If you start to hot, your fist will be in the weld in 5 seconds.......

No one can prediscribe your amps.
It comes with knowledge & experiance.....

Its not like a mig (where sound helps) you need to practice on scrap and what method makes you happy aka figure 8, Z, C, S, ,and you need to chase the dark spot on the weld when your welding.

Welding with a stick is like MIG in one respect. The amperage goes up the more penetration you need. The first thing I would recommend is going to a welding shop and getting a hand book that has different amperages for each thickness of metal. Then go from there.

As to welding to a cast iron piece I usually pre-heat the cast with my torch to just less than cherry red then use nickle rod. It helps with the brittle aspect of the cast and also allows better penetration.

I wonder if macgyver would agree... is I use a NICKEL....as in 5 cent piece... would that work... I cant wait til my experiment phase gets underway!!!

If you haven't already found it, there is a welding shop on 90A down by Oreilleys. I get supplies there. Also, Northern Tool and Home Depot carry welding supplies at a good price.

Over time you'll have welds looking like mine too. Hell, you didn't have bad looking welds when you practiced on the scrap we had there.
