If you have a non fuel injected version, they are easy to work on. There have been lots of upgrades for them, at least here in the states. They ride well off road too with their torsion bar suspension. They are relatively water tight. We used to call them pregnant roller skates here in the states. Engines are easy to work on. They drop out the bottom. Larger jugs and so forth are available for more horsepower. The heater in the older ones suck.

Oops, should have checked the ad. I know almost nothing about those. But really Wayne, what you need is the WWII version. The VW Schvim Vagon was amphibious. It was 4WD and had a propeller that dropped down and hooked on the end of the crank shaft in water.

the new Beetle is not the same in any way as the old Beetles. the old ones were rolling bathtubs, I took a 61 across a river in 68 and didn't have one drop of water inside. the new ones are more audi than VW and are not as good for off roading. I had an automatic beetle that I took off road all the time, bone stock. the new ones when treated like that, fall apart. they are good for pavement and gas mileage and that's about it. All the dune buggies and VW rails are based on the old VW's the engines in those were designed by Porsche, I had a super beetle that I put a porsche engine in, it was a direct fit for all the bolts and motor mounts. I also had a VW Campmobile that had a porsche 911R engine in it. that one was fun, beat out several corvetts with that one.

I used to drive a VW Beatle for the pharmacy I worked for. Making drug deliveries. It's an amazing vehicle. I was 17 and VERY hard on it.

Besides if the VW looked like that one I would have begged Mr. Franks to let me borrow it for the weekend.

I will be replacing the head on one of these in about 1 week. I personally don't like them.

Then go for it.....
it's a car, it is like every other car, it will have it's pro and cons. It's a VW anyway it is most likely made like anyother car in this category....

I doubt that your misses will want to go off road with it ;) that is why you have the jeep for anyway.

The rest is only personal preferences....

I know I buy cars on what they look like, gas mileage and confort....
