It varies depending on the year. bigjim350 has a RC 6.5" on his and no SYE.

Generally speaking you don't want to go 4.5" or higher, without a transmission drop on the 4.5" and SYE for anything greater.

2.5" should be no problem. If you get any drive line vibes, it is easily fixed.

I'm sure with 3.5" you will be just fine. If you have any vibes or any binding you may want a transfer case drop, but you should'nt need one

Just a SYE. Or maybe a YJ slip yoke out of a 87-95 wrangler, it has more clearance and is a bit longer.

I think a SYE is a good idea for stock height. It's something that should have been done from the factory.

I wish they had done an SYE from the factory... but why would they create a vehicle that is completely ready to go?? LOL... I am running 6-6.5" of lift with only a TC drop... for now... I am working on a few other small things and plan on doing an SYE... wasn't planning on going 6" just now... but the price was too good to pass up...

The factory did. The rocktrac transfer case found in all Rubicons (I believe it is the NP241 case) has a flange. Slip yoke is not on the transfer case. True, the transfer case was never offered on any XJ's but...

Yeah I thought about it when I made the statement about why would they create a vehicle that is completely ready to go... they made one that is pretty much ready to go in the Rubicon.. but I'm not paying for one, or even for the 241... just to have the SYE from the factory... I wish they had made the XJ from the factory with a SYE... but that's ok... I'll still pick up an SYE one day hopefully soon..

Oh that's interesting to know. Well yeah I guess it doesn't make a lot of financial sense to increase the cost of the XJ by $25 and then charge the buyer $500 for a factory SYE. With a Rubicon it would be more reasonable to expect that the buyer would take it off road.

hmm very interesting! i just ordered a SYE yesterday for my rig and i have a 6.5 RC lift with TC drop! I know every Xj is different but how the heck is bluedragon436 and bigjim350 running a 6.5 without a SYE?

It is entirely dependant upon the year of XJ you have as stated, but a 94-96 are transition years and they were each different in how far you could push them before a SYE was needed. I had a 96 that needed one at 3" and a 91 that went to 4.5" and never even hinted at having a vibration. I put one on my 90 because I wanted the experience of a 242 HnT. The others were all tear down installations on 231s.
I hope this lets you know that each is different and you need to put the height where you want it and then modify the Jeep to accommodate that lift.

kool thanks for the help so far. it would of been great to put a sye on the 231 from factory.

I guess the only reason I get away with it, is because I have the older style transfer case (pre96).

I did a 3" on mine with no Tcase drop.
