I think I know the answer to this question since you are here on this site, but I thought this would make a great showcase for a recent difference in ideas between two Jeep sites.

Now I must admit as in most differences of opinions one side sees things one way and the other side sees it another. Both sides can't agree and keep the disagreement going, can they?

Would you rather a site filter out bad and/or illegal ideas/activities or allow them so they can be discussed. A learning tool.

For example Cherokee Forum.com has a policy that there will be NO discussion of a vehicle without a catalytic converter. No pictures of vehicles without "cats". You can get infractions and kept from the site if necessary through the use of a timed ban.

Certainly this is their right to run that site the way they see best. I however would rather not see that sort of rule here. People can and do run their rigs without catalytic converters. It's reality and no matter how far you stick your head in the sand it won't change that.

It reminds me of how the church punished people for thinking the Earth revolved around the Sun instead of the other way. Truth is truth no matter how pretty or ugly.

I run a catalytic converter and you should too. Why? Well hell lets discuss it and see what the pros and cons are!

Stopping free speech is a risky business. People in a free society don't take very kindly to being suppressed. Then the ban hammer comes out and people are suppress further.

So what kind of site do you want? Open and free discussion or open and free discussion on say 99% of things?

And catalytic converters aren't the worse things. What about the dangers of welding two coil springs together to increase lift? Maybe a post on where to find the best hookers. Hell even a post on how to make explosives from common house hold cleaners? Where do we draw the line, or should there be?

Of course I can see the point that Cherokee Forum and many other sites have. It is easier just to have a blanket rule that you cannot discuss anything illegal.

So what are your thoughts?

in lue of recent discussions, I think that there should be some kind of rule about things that are illegal. But How excatly can we put a blanket down when we are world wide and every country has different laws. I for one could care less if someone is running without a cat. Its not my ride or my ticket to pay if caught. I am not going to bash them for it. I mean keeping the forum family friendly is always good. Hookers, illegal drugs are a totally different subject. I believe that most people can be a good judge of character of what is ok to post and what is not. I do believe that if a person does step out of line that a warning be issued and that person be watched, but not banned immedaitely and anyone who comes to the defense.

It's obvious that the people on this site are smart enough to know what to post and what not to post with out having to be told

In my humble and not always so wise an opinion, I think it should be open discussion on all things. Putting down these blankets tends to hurt innocent people more than those it is intended for.

An Example of this is the TSA and their wonderful outlook on nail clippers on an airplane. Most people have by now heard about the soldier coming back from serving our country with his issued weapon and wasn't allowed to bring his nail clippers on board.

If people had an honest concern over the discussion of whether something was morally right, or even illegal, they would not continue to read the post. And those that were not aware of the legality issues could be educated by open discussion. And those that have a stick up their rears can open a thread to complain about the open discussion.

What are we if we can't discuss anything and everything? Hmmm the 1980's Soviet Union comes to mind. but hey that is just my 2cents. :patriot:

We all here for talking freely, specially about XJs. I believe everyone have his/her own judgment of good and bad but until now I didn't see something very bad for me. So my opinion is:
- let's talk freely and FRIENDLY
- if there something posted, really endangering to our site working: Moderators please inform; explain; and delete the post

I know nothing about laws, but still living and wheeling :D

I don't suggest you let people talk about making explosive .... that would make your site being shut down very very quickly....
I agree with the no porn (like you drew the line at no nipple showing kind of thing)

Hopefully people are smart enough to have civilised discussions on not so legal activities and feel free to ask the dumb question Why no CAT, why can't I gi wheeling were I want to....

Find a disclaimer:"The views and opinions expressed here are the ones of the poster. The Forum it's owner and administrators cannot be held responsible"

Oh and you better get used to the idea that you WILL NEED some strongly enforced rules that are well defined and written somewhere.....

don't think we (the users) could have made a better mouse trap:thumbsup: having a blanket rule like theres will hinder folks trying to get help! So bring the questions, bring the pics :rotfl2:,and best of all bring the car porn (that's what i call exploded diagrams)

I have NO problem with how this site is operated. I agree with the no porn rule and I really would like not to see profanity (like you see on pirate). I feel that when your setting at a key board and have to type a profane word you just lack the ability to comunicate. (If you can't spell that's ok, I'm there with you).

As far as posting about illegal subjects a little common sense goes a long way. We got locked down on a Diesel Truck forum for talking about street racing. The discusion was about things way back in the day, come on now we all have great stories to share!

That being said there is great bunch of folks on this site and I like hanging out here!

Like it the way it is.
As to the illegal stuff...you have members from all over the globe, heck we got a guy from Mongolia!! Never knew anyone from there.
Thing is, something thats okay for one person, may be illegal in another's country/state/corner of the realm.
A blanket statement will stop the ability to learn of others "life styles". Like how cool it is to have, say, hand guns. Some places...big no no...some places, restricted, and others, no chance in hell. But as I saw, especially with the Texan Brethren, its as common and daily as my drive to Tiimies. Should it be banned cause I cant do it here? Heck no!!
Let the moderators do there job, if they are not sure...ask the members for there opinion..is we agree its not for this site...begone, and write it up as so...
I think Mudder has done a awesome job of running and expanding the site. Heck how many Mods, will respond when you cant get the site to load!! Personally yet!!
I like, I stay.....

Now to pass the soap box to someone else.....

Thanks guys! I've been trying really hard not to respond to any of these comments as I didn't want to sway the conversation to something that might be more inline with my thoughts.

You know like the guy that used seeds to fill the brain cavity of skulls to see if dead white people had bigger brains than dead black people? His not so scientific experiments gave exactly the results he had expected all along.

Fact is that CherokeeForum is a much bigger site that us. My goal is to make this site big. Not for the sake of it being big but to effect a change on all the other Jeep sites.

Too many of the Jeep sites have an underbelly of members that like to make people feel bad. Use your search button! Did you notice how old this thread is and your replying to it! You know I'm smart and you are stupid kind of attitude.

I want it to be the policy on all the Jeep sites that this tread of mistreatment of members, visitors, etc... must stop. If we get enough members here and they all lose enough members over there (all Jeep sites) then they will effect this change.

Owners, Admins, and Moderators are not excluded from this behavior. So my question of what kind of site do you want is really me questioning my core belief and goal of how do you want to be treated.

If you ask someone do you want me to treat you with respect everyone will answer yes. But you also answer with what Jeep site you choose to go to. It may be that people enjoy sites where people are belittled as long as they are not the one being belittled. Perhaps it makes a person feel better about themselves because they can fit in like on a Pirate site.

I know I'm not going to change the site direction here. We're going to forge ahead in our goal to force change on the other sites. You the members will decide if that change will occur.

I want to make this absolutely clear. This recent incident with CherokeeForum has only highlighted this concern for me. CherokeeForum just like NAXJA, CherokeeTalk, JeepForum, etc... are really great, helpful, and informative sites! A good 99% of the people there are helpful and not hateful.

I'm not in ANY way saying CherokeeForum is any worse or better than any of those other sites.

As far as CherokeeForum is concerned I want that NO CATALYTIC CONVERTER TALK ALLOWED rule replaced with NO MAKING PEOPLE FEEL STUPID rule!

* do you ever type a word so many times that your forget how to spell it? That started happening just now with Cherokee!!!! :smiley-laughing021:
