Hey guys,
just bought a 90 XJ in oklahoma and the rear main was leaking a little, by the time i got home the seal prob exploded. if i let it run and shut it off it will leak a quart out fairly quickly. So, aren't the rear main seals on this 90 XJ 4.0 a 2 piece? How hard are they to fix? I was told i dont need to drop the trans. Any pointers yall can tell me will greatly benifit me before i tear it apart tomorrow. THANKS!

Pretty easy to fix, after you let the suspension way down out of the way. There are several good write ups on it. Check out the one on the gojeep website

I did it on a 91XJ and it wasn't too bad, considering my skills are not as a mechanic!

finally got it off using a crow bar and a hammer hitting it a thousand times, it bent in some places but i'll hammer it back out. i tried using a putty knife to clean the old gasket off, hell no, its burned on there, on the oil pan and block! got a wire brush on a air ratchet and am gonna start cleanin, changin the rear main is really a pain, and very messy!

got the rear main seal on and oil pan back on there. i don't ever wanna do that again! W/O a lift that is...cleaning the block was sooo hard! got a drill with a wire dremel piece and used that but dang my hair and face was covered in that crap. No leaky yet tho so i guess i cant complain :boohoo:
