I finally got the tags for the XJ on Wednesday. Driving it home it all of a sudden had a major loss of power and it sounded like it was backfiring into the intake. However there was no smoke coming from it so I figured I would take a look in the oil pan to see what was going on. Laying underneath the jeep realizing I only had a couple hours until I left for work I decided on the Valve Cover instead. Im glad I started there, it gave me an insight of what to expect when I pull the pan.

Kind of hard to see but the build up underneath the Breather tube was horrible

Old Gasket material underneath the RTV... clean up should be fun:confused:

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/OutlawXJ/dscn0330.jpg
Cant tell in the pic but the oil has no lubrication... feels like water

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/OutlawXJ/dscn0328.jpg
Not to much sludge... alot less than I expected!

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/OutlawXJ/dscn0327.jpg
The lip on the RTV hangs down almost an 1/8th of an inch!! RTV MUCH:eek:

Taking the valve cover to work tonight to bead blast it and use the solvent to get all the crap out. Then comes some fresh paint. I will post more pics as I continue to explore the beast and keep you all posted!

Well looks like you have a handle on the problem, but I am not sure that caused the backfiring.

I use a wood chisel to get the silicone off. Comes off easy that way.

Yeah I just wanted to get an idea of how it looked around the vavle springs. plus it gave me a good excuse to paint the vavle cover. :rotfl2:

Freshly painted vavle cover... and a preview of the new color for the outside:D

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/OutlawXJ/dscn0340.jpg
First step is a light dusting to give the paint something to stick to.

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/OutlawXJ/dscn0341.jpg
Masking it up for the detail work.

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/OutlawXJ/dscn0342.jpg
All masked and ready for the final color

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/OutlawXJ/dscn0343.jpg
Again a light dusting for the final color. This helps to keep runs down on any rattle can job.

The final product with the black accent stripes, Letting it set over night then the final flat high temp clear will be applied and I will post the picks of the final product.

Thanks for the wood chisel idea. The scraper I had wasn't doing the trick so I went and bought a wood chisel and it came right off the head!:thumbsup:

Well after pulling the pump I bought on the 16th of this month I could see the strainer was collapsed from all the rust build up after 2 weeks... so I broke down and bought a new fuel tank. Its so shiny and pretty!!

So there I was... walked into my local Autozone... and said give me a new gastank fool!!! LOL.. I wonder if any of my local parts stores just happen to have a gas tank for an XJ in stock... should ask that some time, and see what they do.. Hopefully this fuel pump will last longer than a week or two...

Yeah I did a compression test today... results not good. :(
Cylinder's
1=70psi
2=75psi
3=80psi
4=70psi
5=65psi
6=30psi

That explains the lack of power

The haynes manual says the compression should be between 120-150psi.
Started taking the motor apart before it started getting dark. Not a happy camper right now :boohoo:

When I was a kid, my dad took a trade in at the car lot. While cleaning it up we found the hubcaps were full of weed. The guy came back the next day to get some "stuff" out of his car, but my dad had already put it in a pile and burned it in the pasture. I know what some of yall are thinking "what a waste", but hell the cows were really happy, then lazy and really hungry.
