I installed these lights yesterday and hook up the relays and switches for them.

I hook it up to the top switch and first relay for the lights. the second switch to the relay but not to the lights.

When turn on the top switch on they work fine....then when I turn on the second switch....the lights turn off....whats causing this problem????

Why do you have two switches to the same relay?

Need a wiring diagram to understand how it is hooked up.

I was going to say it sounds like you have two switches wired to the same circuit... so it would be the same as if you have a switch on one wall in your house and one on another wall for the same light... so you can turn it on/off on either side of the room... I would think you shouldn't need that second switch at all...especially if the lights work with it "off"

It is hard for me to tell from the pic just exactly what you did since I can't see where the wires go. I am not sure why you have two relays yet either. Anyway, here is a pic of relay terminals.

The right and left vertical terminals are for the switch wire and ground. It makes no difference which you use for this purpose. The vertical terminal on the bottom is for power in. The horizontal post in the middle is power out and hot until you turn on the switch. The horizontal terminal on the top becomes power out when switched.

This is how I have setup for the 2 separate switches......

Were you trying to be able to use One switch per light? So that you had to have both switches on to have both lights burning? I see no other reason to have two switches.
The diagram you show looks like it would work but is only one switch. so yeah both lights would be to the same switch and relay. if you were trying to have one switch for the right light and one for the left, you have to split the light power wires, one per switch.

where is 2nd switch and why use 3 pole switch? Did switches or relays "accidentally" have series connection?

lol yeah diagram doesn't show a 2nd switch. Boy am I confused by this one...

One line is for the light on the switch.

I am still tryin to figure this one out.If you have these lights hooked up to one switch and the lights cut off when you flip the 2nd switch on is it possible you connected one of the wires to 2nd relay? If so that would explain the lights cutting out when that switch is flipped. Since there are 3 wires coming from the first relay it is possible one got mixed up and hooked into the 2nd relay.

Why is there two relays and two switches for only two lights?

I would rewire the lights to one relay and one switch, leave the other switch and relay for something else. Electrical is not the best thing to be messing with...

I have four lights off of one switch and one relay.

I'm still trying to figure out why you would have 2 switch unless your going to run 1 light to each switch...
and the diagram you have is set up for one switch...

Well you can always do this.... dont turn the other switch on...:D

Ok well can you confirm this statement from your original post?

I hook it up to the top switch and first relay for the lights. the second switch to the relay but not to the lights.

I think this is the reason for our confusion...

You can run any number of relays off one switch. My recommendation is to disconnect one switch and use it for something else. Use one relay to power the lights unless the lights exceed the capacity of the relay. If they do, divide the lights up and use the one switch to power both. You do not need a relay to power a relay unless the second relay is very large, such as a starter solenoid.
