So im riding on 33" tsl's. I think they are 12.5 but im not sure. My problem is this thing throws mud like crazy. Our deer lease is red clay like out at Shiloridge and the windsheild wipers are useless. I have looked at the bushwacker cut out 5" cover, but im not sure if its going to be enough cover. My wheels seem to stick out further than 5". Is this going to be my best and only option? Thanks guys

Are you trying to avoid all the mud from getting on your rockers? I've got the bushwacker flares, and have really like them. I've beat them up, once I actually ripped it completely of my XJ (stupidity on my part, wasn't paying attention). The flare and a scratch and a couple of the bolt holt locations had some cracks. Easily fixed with some fiberglass (sheetrock tape) and epoxy. I've got 35x12.5, I get some mud on my rockers but no where near as much as when I didn't have them or has much as my FIL's CJ (which has wider flares and narrow tires).

im trying to avoid this. after driving around the lease at 10-15 mph im throwing golf ball to soft ball size clumps on the hood, roof, windshield, and i cant roll the window down because of the mud being thrown through it. Dont get me wrong, i love the mud just not when im headed to the stand and especially want to keep it off the windshield so i can see.

Flare-less as well. I am looking for a good way to put some on in the future. does anyone have any plans for using lawn edging as a cheap flare? I need to get it to pass inspection.

It's not too hard to measure how far your tires stick out past the body. I usually measure off the body straight over the center line of the axle. My 98 XJ is running 33x12.5s & 4.5 backset on the rims, which is a fairly standard backset for aftermarket rims. At the centerline of the axle the 33s extend out past the body around 3" to maybe 3.5".

So, it is no coincidence that the fender flares on my XJ are Napier Precision Product V2 XJ flares that extend out 3.25" past the body!

I used to live in Western Oregon, land of the temperate rain forest. Mud, mud and more mud, except for a little sand on the coast. It was ugly, but I made flairs out of conveyor belting, which can be gotten in any size at industrial supply houses, or even scrap. But new is better because it is stiffer. Anyway, I covered my 16" wide tires on my CJ and added one more thing. A flexible mud flap that went down behind the front tire. I don't know if any of you have heard of Foster Mud Flats by Sweet Home OR, but I raced all day with out top and windshield and stayed clean. The front mud flap did the trick.

At some point I would like to build tube flares, but that takes time and patience. You must have a serious wide stance to sling mud like that over the existing flares.

Im in the process... thought portion if it at least, of making some easily removable flares...not sure what material to use but it would mostly be for cosmetics and light debris but my idea can be tweaked a little to accomodate much heavier debris. basically I would like to design something using polypro or ABS and have it flush with the width of the tires and attach either by REALLY strong magnets or by velcro... Ive tested thing and velcro seems to be a decent venture but the strips would need to be riveted into place to hold up to weather and water this way you can be street legal AND easily remove them when your out wheelin and the things just get in the way!

I have seen a few guys build some really clean tube flares for an XJ that also work as body armor. I cant find any good pics right now but its worth looking into.

for some strong magnets try the ones inside of a harddrive if you use 1 it holds good if you put one on the inside and 1 on the flar you may have a hard time pulling them off.

A lot of folks up here in the Willamette valley still use the conveyor belting for flairs on their XJs. I personally don't care for the look of them, but they are functional for sure.

On another note, bad news about Foster... the Army Corps of Engineers stopped letting them hold the mud drags and stuff there about 8 or 10 years ago, they've been trying to have it on private property here and there, but it hasn't been the same since. Fortunately we still have Brown's Camp...

Yeah I intend on doing this before I order my flares. My jeep is at the deer lease right now (20 miles east of Lufkin). Nice picture by the way. Those flares are nice but ive read that they are not available for my year model, and im not sure if they are available for 2 door.

Foster was fun. Guaranteed mud when it is under water 11 months a year.

Hey there wheelers. Chuck here. Wanted to ask for your input and thoughts. I'm about to order fenders for my 2001 xj. I chosen the V2's. Which one should I GET for the rear and WHY. Standard ones or the cut and fold. What is the advantage of the cut and fold.
Thanks

Cut and fold allows you to use a larger tire without rubbing the sheet metal

Hey there. Thanks for the post. I called and bought the v2 today. Got the ones for the cut and fold. They will be shipped on Monday. I found some great post on how yo do the cut and folds. And how to cut the finders. Xjtalk and cherokeeforum has been a great place for information.
I live in a town just below LA. in Orange County. (Oc) where are you. Our weather today is beautiful. For a change. Been cold a lot this winter.
Again thanks for your input.
