If you have an engine hoist that works. That is how I do mine. However I know that Bull Bar has to be heavy.

When I first got my 9,000 lbs winch I was concerned how the bumper would hold it and adding that much weight might damage my suspension. :pee:

i think i know the answer before i ask...put it in the engine bay...BUT:p
Ive just pulled solenoid box for winch apart, and funny enough it has moister in it......:D its mounted on the flat bit on the arb bar...just about 3/4 grill height...is there a good way of sealing the box up, cause for the mean time that's what I'm gonna do as got a run next weekend and don't think i will find the extra leads i would need in broken ch ch.....this has not been in the water but it did sit in there the time it was drowned awhile back.. i didn't check it then like i should have:crazy:....it worked good as last time out as we winched the yota 80 series out,,that's a big heavy pos.....:rolleye0012:
thoughts.....there is a marine grease i could use?????
dont think you can see moister in pics

Wayne

If you seal it, every time you hit the cool water it will get condensation in it. You might consider mounting it high in the engine compartment and let the engine heat keep it dry.

05-27-2011, 10:29 PM
Wayne, take some jumpers and go directly from the battery to terminals on the winch motor and see what you get. It should spin the motor.

cantab27
05-27-2011, 10:30 PM

Sorry to be slow, wifey on the net. There is one other thing you can do. Take a little effen hammer and tap on the end of the motor. Sometimes the brushes can get stuck. If that doesn't work, you may need to take it apart. Might be a little of the river in it.

cantab27
05-28-2011, 12:20 AM
well got it inside now,,,will pull apart tomorrow, getting cold and dark so enough for today....put bar back on so jeep is mobile.... dont think it will be much ,was working had it pulling rope back in and just stopped and started the clicking shit.....thanks Steve....
will post pics of it apart..........KEEP IT GREEN .....

That is what my Mile Marker did. No drama. Kicked it around on the shop floor and threatened to take it apart and it started working again. Sticky brushes.

cantab27
05-30-2011, 11:18 PM
well hooked it up gave it a couple of love taps and it went,,be it slow but...then stopped again....think I'm gonna pull it apart but have no idea how,,,anyways its one of these

Wayne, those oar torx screws. Takes a torx bit for the ratchet. But you don't want to remove those. They hold the fields in. The end cap should be all you need to remove to access the brushes that are sticking.

cantab27
05-31-2011, 12:44 PM
cheers steve...5.30am here ...will have a go after work.....stay tuned

4.3LXJ
05-31-2011, 02:32 PM
I will be here if you need advise. I would recommend removing the motor completely if you can. It should unbolt from the body. There will be a shaft that goes through the drum to the gear box on the other side. Should come freely apart from the main part. The thing those torx bolts hold, called the fields, make an electric magnet when the current is passed through them. The armature also makes a selective magnet with parts going on and off as it rotates. The motor works strictly on magnetic attraction. So after you pull the armature, if you want you can pull the fields and paint the inside of the case. But make sure that they can make good contact with it or your winch will not work. Use some waterproof grease in the bushings on either end of the armature. You can use a sparing amount of dielectric grease on the brushes, but only a little because it conducts electricity. I am talking a thin film here to keep the brushes free. That you could tap it and get it to work indicates the brushes are not moving freely. Solve that problem and you will be good to go.

Glad you got it apart. Certainly savable. Those things with the heavy copper wires on them are the brushes. That is what was stuck. The lower one in the pic does not look like it is making good contact. Might need to free up the copper wire a little for it.

05-31-2011, 09:41 PM

Good tip for batteries is to make the main a heavy duty and run off it, secondary is then used to start if other is flat. Main is closer to altenator and will always charge faster.
