How many offroad lights is too many?
How many is enough?
Is there such thing as too many offroad lights?
Some may say you shouldn't have more lights than the capacity to run them, but you don't have to turn them all on at the same time do you?

:smiley-laughing021: OF COURSE YOU DO!!!!! :smiley-laughing021:

Tony...

After listening to the podcast you were talking about off road lights and how you had posted up asking which ones you should get and you had made mention of how many lights were legal in Texas. Couldn't find that particular post so I thought I would post it up here for you.

Per the Texas Statues it appears that only 2 auxiliary lights are allowed on a vehicle, mounted no lower than 16" and no higher than 42"

Great, thanks. Of course that doesn't apply to lights that are off.

And BTW, it's really cool to read "After listening to the podcast you were talking about off road lights..."

More importantly, can your electrical system handle the extra lights?

If you believe only 2 are on at any one time great.

Too many is when you run out of room to mount them and there is still one left :D

i think 6 foward and 2 reverse is perfect 2 on bumper and 4 on basket for the front and i put 2 reverse on the back of the basket

the last baja racer I ran in had 6 on a top bar, four on the bumper bar, three out back, and four on long chords with bases for tire changing etc. I would have liked to have had a good way to double stack the top bar for a total up there of 10 on the top. Those seemed to be the lights that made the biggest difference in the dark to me. We tried it in testing and they tended to break off from the bouncing creating a swaying motion that made the brackets fail, so off they came.

To me the set up of 4 up top 2 on front and 2 in back would be enough for any rig.

100 watts x 4 (front) x 4 (top) = 800 watts.

800 watts / 12 volts = 66.6 amps

55 watts x 4 (front) x 4 (top) = 440 watts

440 watts / 12 volts = 36.6 amps

So as you can see it depends on what the light wattage is.

Calculate 150w for the fuel pump and additional 250w for the ignition.
360w for the A/C when the A/C starts, which falls down to 240W while operating

Your alternator puts out 1400w and 700w while idle.

So your Jeep consumes 400w while running without A/C- now start to calculate your power demands.

Hope that helps.
