AW4 2wd to 4wd conversion

ok I got a question I need to kick out to you guy's since I can't get a straight forward answer. I took this off a different forum. The part numbers are no good with my dealer buddy, But here is a pic of a AW4 4wd and it looks possible to convert since the tail housing unbolts.

You need to remove the 2WD tailstock and replace it with the transfer case adaptor and change the output shaft, bearings, and seals.

These are the part numbers unique to the 4WD AW4:

Transfer case adaptor 83504 054
Shaft (4WD) 83503 941
Seal 83503 943

Yes, you have to change the tail shaft and tail housing

Depends on how u see it:shocker: i have a 2wd jeep with a good tranny and a bad 4x4 tranny :thumbsup:

Good luck with the swap. My BIL converted a 2wd MJ to 4wd, but he decided to pick up a tranny out of a rig that already had the 4wd.

I'd have a hard time swapping transmissions if I felt my 2wd transmission was good and the 4x4 transmission I would pick up from the junk yard was an unknown.

Trust me on this, installing an Atlas in an XJ is not a simple matter. To do a divorced Atlas, you would need to modify the floor boards on the drivers side as well as the seat pedicel. Then there is getting the linkage to come out clean. It is not console friendly.
