I drove my 89 XJ tonight to pick up my son. Got home turned it off went inside for an hour or two came back out to go to work and no lights. No headlights, park lights, instrument cluster. I had Interior lights and all of the warning lights. Does anyone have an idea on what may cause this.

That would most likely be a fuse, or possibly a relay. All those lights are on the same circut

Bad switch could be the problem.

Where was I when the lights went out.......................................in the dark.

Yep if is not a fuse or relay, it is most likely the turn signal switch/lever itself.

I am thinking it is the relay. It happened on it before. Its a buddy's jeep and he said that he could disconnect the battery a few times and they would start working. So I am guessing that now the relay has went out.

Bad switch could be the problem...

Yep!

Yep if is not a fuse or relay, it is most likely the turn signal switch/lever(??) itself.

...more likely the headlight switch. The multi-function switch in the stalk does not control the headlights OR the dash lights.

Well I am got the lights working for now. I had to tap on the cluster of 4 relays under the hood. The lights came on. Now just got to figure out which one is in the headlight circuit.

Not really sure if there's a "headlight circuit" in the Relay Center, but here's a diagram.

Not sure if there is a headlight relay or not up there... but if there is you can find it by having someone cut the lights on while you are standing next to them listening... and if you hear a click go from there having them cycle them as you get closer to the relays and can identify which one is clicking....

must be a ground problem then. Hmmmm. You can tap or move them and the lights will come on.
