I am wondering how I tell if my 98 Xj has a 8.25 or Dana in the rear. The front diff is clearly marked with the dana symbol on it with a 3.55 gear.I see nothing on the rear cover.I think it's a 8.25 but not sure.

Well your rear diff will be in an oval form regardless of which you have.. but if it has more of a flat spot on the bottom than you are looking at a 8.25... Here is a link that shows all kinds of axles... but it does show the Ch. 8.25 and the Dana 35... so you can see what they both look like... http://www.4wheelnoffroad.com/axle.html

If it has ABS it is a D35 if not it could be either. The 8.25 has 3" axle tubes and I think D35 is 2.75".

Chrysler 8.25" ID

Note the flat bottom on the center section, and the raised lip around the cover of the 8.25". The D35 has an oval bottom and flat mounting flange around the diff cover.
