I have a 1996 Cherokee that has no tow hitch and was pampered before I bought it.

I need some of your knowledge reguarding what the average life span of the front coils and rear leafs are, not including Jeeps that have been towing alot and jumping off cliffs :beavis:

How can I tell if the coils & leafs are ca-put ?

Thanks in advance for your time, rest assured I will pass on what I learn to others so your time won`t be waisted :fighting0061:

I can speak first hand on the Leaf Springs. When they start to sag down ward they are ca-put. I just changed mine and they had already started curving down . Hope that helps ya some.

To see if the springs are loosing their temper, measure the distance from the center of the hub on the wheel to the bottom of the fender flare. 17.5" front, 17" rear.

I've never seen a new XJ's "new stock ride height", but my 94 sagged pretty badly before I lifted it. In the rear, I couldn't stick my hand in straight between the tire and the wheel well without touching both of them. My leafs were sagging down pretty bad. That's when I knew that I needed a new setup. I didn't have a tow hitch on it either, so I'm assuming it's from regular wear and tear. I had 129000 miles on it when I lifted it.

This was a few years ago. Just before I lifted it, it was worse. I lifted it about 3 weeks ago.

This is with a 3.5" RE lift.

Just measured from hub to fender flare. With my lift I got 22" up front and 21.5" in the rear. I have subs/box/amp and tools in the rear.

I estimated that before my lift, my rear was at 15" and the front was at about 17"

That is exactly what my 96 XJ country has... The 70+ year old lady that owned it befroe me really did pamper it:drool:
