I went through my drag racing stage. I had a mid 10 sec. F-body. But I find I have ten times more fun going 10-20 MPH through a trail. :D

From the owner on the site.

"My setup on the Jeep is a "built small block chevy" running a highly built 700r4, 4.56 gears now with front and rear lockers. 2500 converter. Definetely not a 10.5 rig, but it should be a 11.2 -11.4 now. Its an animal with the new gears. Its an eight mile machine really, as the its dangerous at high speed being fully locked axles. I will be returning it back to trail duty with a lesser motor soon."

I am hoping he would at least leave it as a small block chevy... I am just hoping he meant a smaller less built small block chevy, not like he was going to put a 4.3L chevy or even put a 4.0 back in... that would be completely stupid... but that is just me, and it isn't my money... so guess it doesn't really matter too much what I think... would def. be a beast on the trail though with that setup he has now...

That would be fun to walk away from lots of the people on the road these days.

Is there someone out there that makes a swap kit for the 4.0l to s.b.chevy-b.b.chevy conversion?I wonder if you could use the trans that is already in your Xj? With a adapter of course&a major performance upgrade.Hardened race parts, stall converter etc...

Yes, two companies, Novak Enterprises and Advance Adapters. But from my experience with my own conversion, you are better off using the GM tranny behind the small blocks. The 700R4/4L60E had a lower first gear ratio than the AW4 and compensates well for less torque at low RPMs. The overdrive is deeper too to allow you to run lower axle gears too

What about the tranny to transfer case? Will the 700r4 0r the 4L60e work with the np231?

I prefer the B.B.C motor over the S.B.C.Will it fit in the Xj?Looks like there is plenty of room, but you never know until you actually do the swap.Maybe there is someone out there who has done this on their Xj?

It is easier at that point to use the 231C which has a heavier chain anyway.

A big block will fit, except you can't run an exhaust off of it without altering the frame rails.

Check my build, the 4.3 is just a cut down 5.7. I can tell you it is a tight fit.
