Alright my jeep isn't shifting right. It slips in every gear but when I manually put it in first its normal, but only in first. It happened after I played in some mud. My dad did some researching while I was at work and we think it could be my neutral safety switch. We cant seem to find it. Anyone have opinions or pictures of where its located? I posted on Naxja but no one ever answers my questions there. Thanks!:driving:

I'd be surprised if a NSS would cause it to slip. NSS keeps the motor from starting unless the transmission is in park or neutral.

Keep checking back, more knowledgeable members will be throwing in ideas soon.

maby this will help

http://www.rototex.eu/XJ/AW4_diag.pdf

it is a part of the AW4 manual

as i read when it starts to occur, i think it will be the shift linkage being out of adjustment.

There is also a cable that runs from your throttle linkage to the transmission.
From the FSM:

THROTTLE VALVE CABLE
Transmission throttle valve cable adjustment is
extremely important to proper operation. This adjustment
positions the throttle valve, which controls shift
speed, quality, and part-throttle downshift sensitivity.
If cable setting is too loose, early shifts and slippage
between shifts may occur. If the setting is too
tight, shifts may be delayed and part throttle downshifts
may be very sensitive. Refer to the Adjustments
section for the proper adjustment procedure

Continued:

TRANSMISSION THROTTLE VALVE CABLE
ADJUSTMENT
The transmission throttle valve is operated by a
cam on the throttle lever. The throttle lever is operated
by an adjustable cable (Fig. 180). The cable is
attached to an arm mounted on the throttle lever
shaft. A retaining clip at the engine-end of the cable
is removed to provide for cable adjustment. The
retaining clip is then installed back onto the throttle
valve cable to lock in the adjustment.
A correctly adjusted throttle valve cable will cause
the throttle lever on the transmission to move simultaneously
with the throttle body lever from the idle
position. Proper adjustment will allow simultaneous
movement without causing the transmission throttle
lever to either move ahead of, or lag behind the lever
on the throttle body.

Checking Throttle Valve Cable Adjustment
(1) Turn ignition key to OFF position.
(2) Remove air cleaner.
(3) Verify that lever on throttle body is at curb idle
position. Then verify that transmission throttle lever
(Fig. 181) is also at idle (fully forward) position.
(4) Slide cable off attachment stud on throttle body
lever.
(5) Compare position of cable end to attachment
stud on throttle body lever:
â€* Cable end and attachment stud should be
aligned (or centered on one another) to within 1 mm
(0.039 in.) in either direction.
â€* If cable end and attachment stud are misaligned
(off center), cable will have to be adjusted as
described in Throttle Valve Cable Adjustment procedure.
(6) Reconnect cable end to attachment stud. Then
with aid of a helper, observe movement of transmission
throttle lever and lever on throttle body.
â€* If both levers move simultaneously from idle to
half-throttle and back to idle position, adjustment is
correct.
â€* If transmission throttle lever moves ahead of, or
lags behind throttle body lever, cable adjustment will
be necessary. Or, if throttle body lever prevents
transmission lever from returning to closed position,
cable adjustment will be necessary.
Throttle Valve Cable Adjustment Procedure
(1) Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
(2) Remove air cleaner if necessary.
(3) Disconnect cable end from attachment stud.
Carefully slide cable off stud. Do not pry or pull
cable off.
(4) Verify that transmission throttle lever is in
fully closed position. Then be sure lever on throttle
body is at curb idle position.
(5) Insert a small screwdriver under edge of
retaining clip and remove retaining clip.
(6) Center cable end on attachment stud to within
1 mm (0.039 in.).
NOTE: Be sure that as the cable is pulled forward
and centered on the throttle lever stud, the cable
housing moves smoothly with the cable. Due to the
angle at which the cable housing enters the spring
housing, the cable housing may bind slightly and
create an incorrect adjustment.
(7) Install retaining clip onto cable housing.
(8) Check cable adjustment. Verify transmission
throttle lever and lever on throttle body move simultaneously.

Hope this helps

its not the TV cable we already checked that. My alternator is bad and the voltage is really low. My dad moved my jeep and he said the tranny worked fine but the engine sputtered really bad. He thinks its not getting enough voltage.

Got to love computers running everything... everything has to be just right for it to work correctly... the plane I work on is the exact same way...

That might just be it. Not only does the computer need the voltage, but the electronic solenoids as well so they can make a proper shift. Get your battery charged up and then try it. 12V will be enough to work it right.

Yeah I am kind of curious as to what it ends up being too... the last time I read about threads about people having issues with their Jeeps just cutting off and not wanting to start again... I kind of ignored the outcome.. until it happened to me, then I wished I had read them all the way through to the fix... Darn CPS!!!
